Any interior decorators here?

Or anyone who has a clue about color at all. Because I apparently don’t. Just ask Mr. L.
So, here’s the deal. The family room/living room is decorated with 3 wedding kimono - various colors and other various orientalia - couch is a deep green sectional. I just wallpapered the downstairs hall (I had painted it bright red, but got so much flack about it I just gave into papering.) The paper is your standard cream background with a light modern floral print in primary colors. Upstairs hall and liv/fam room is pale pale yellow. So pale it looks white. The largest wall in this room extends without a break into the hall. One big continuous wall. (well, except for three doorways). To liven things up, I began painting the opposing hall wall a bright yellow. Mr. L. looks at it and promptly declared it “clown yellow”. The two teenagers looked at and said, “it’s really…bright!” That pissed me right off and I refused to paint anymore, vowing that when the paint dried I would paint over in plain boring white.
Mr. L then whisked me to Home Depot and made me pick out another color. I really like bright jewel tones, he likes pastels and earthtones. To reach a truce, I chose a medium green. We came home, painted, and it looks like a wall of snot. It doesn’t even remotely match anything, and while I can choose to ignore it, HGTV is just rubbing my face in beautiful rooms. To top it off, we have two odd shaped windows (picture a long rectangle with a triangle at the top and bottom - overall height about 40") on the wall opposite the kimonos. These windows face the street, and you can see straight into the house when you are on the front deck. Curtains or blinds would just look ridiculous. I thought a stained glass effect would be nice, and found some of that clingy stuff for windows. I picked out 2 classic stained glass patterns. Mr. L. overrules and picks out these huge purple orchids. “Okay”, I think, he does have a better grasp at color than I do, let’s put them up. We do, I go outside to view the effect. My god does it suck! It looks like we just moved it and threw up some cheap bed sheets. The two teenagers came out with me, and then had to hurry inside when we noticed a car coming down the street. They were afraid someone might accidently see them and the sucky windows. So, any help here?
