I’m thinking she’ll clear the fence quite easily. This is shaping to be something really special.
Make Me Feel came on the radio there or four weeks ago, and I really enjoyed it. I rarely like songs on the first listen. Since then, I haven’t heard it even once more on the radio.
I listened to this. Really good! The addition of Lizzo as a guest contributor was perfect. The podcast hosts are a songwriter and producer - they know their stuff and explain it really well. I am not big on how they come across - this podcast doesn’t seem to allow profanity (although you hear the line “fuckin’ real” in the song) or discussion of sex (although they seem to support a sexuality-positive, be your authentic self message). it just makes discussing what Janelle is going for in this song a bit funny. And these guys are a bit dorky - when complimenting Lizzo on a track, one of them says “That groove was so strong I nearly got a crick in my neck bopping, darn it!”
But the way they break down the song is excellent. Grounding the Monae track in a blues structure and then comparing it to Michael Jackson’s The Way You Make Me Feel and then Prince’s Kiss really works out well. Some great bits of insight similar to what Rick Beato does on What Makes this Song Great? on YouTube. Thanks!
Was it hiding behind the sexual text? ![]()
Prince and Kanye, outstanding.
A few years back I was seeing her in commercials all the time and wondering if she was just famous for being gorgeous and trendy. Then I saw her actually perform on Later with Jools Holland and became an instant fan.
I dig the Kansas City shout out in “Django Jane.” (That’s where I got to see her perform three years ago - a lovely “homecoming”).
I enjoy the PYNK video just for the geology. At least that’s what I tell my wife. ![]()
She named her label, or whatever it is, after one of my favorite tracks from *Archandroid *(Wondaland).
I see the Tessa Thompson shipper trolling has been significantly upped in the PYNK video, which is awesome.
I’m late to the party!
You guys ever hear of Jidenna? He’s a protege of Janelle Monae (well, he’s on her label and they do some tracks together). Django Jane reminds me of her version of Jidenna’sLong Live the Chief. Different messages to the songs but similar sounds and looks (when it comes to the video).
Thanks for pointing me towards “Switched on Pop” with Lizzo. She is my goddess. And you know Janelle is her goddess!
Yep. Classic Man is my jam.
I’ve seen him on late night shows. He’s smooth.
This is real nice. I get a doo-wop sort of vibe from it which I’ve always enjoyed and doesn’t seem to get nearly the love I think it should nowadays.
She’s featured in the NYTimes Sunday Magazne this week: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/19/magazine/how-janelle-monae-found-her-voice.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=photo-spot-region®ion=top-news&WT.nav=top-news
Yeah. I think it might be my favorite track so far actually.
Roman GianArthur opened for Janelle when I saw her in concert. He was smooth as well.
Rolling Stones story on Janelle and the new album:
Let’s not forget her guest vocals for Duran Duran’s “Pressure Off”–and check her out in the video:
They had decided that the song needed something, and that something was Janelle. Good decision.Just finished listening to Dirty Computer. It’s just fantastic. This is definitely going into the car CD library.
