I just finished the last of the four Thursday Next books by Jasper Fforde (The Eyre Affair, Lost in a Good Book, The Well of Lost Plots, and Something Rotten) and enjoyed them quite a bit!
The ending of Something Rotten is also quite touching and could be construed as final, although lingering plot threads do remain.
Anyone know if more Thursday Next books are planned?
I swear I read somewhere what the title of the next Thursday Next will be, but I’ll be damned if I can remember where now. I’m getting ready to start “The Big Over Easy,” starring Jack Spratt.
Since the last thread on Thursday Next, I have read books three and four. I enjoyed them all, and I’m going to have to read them all again sometime to catch everything I missed (or didn’t fully appreciate) the first time through. My reaction, though, was the opposite of Johnny Ecks’s in that other thread: The Well of Lost Plots was my favorite, because I loved all the biblioverse stuff; Something Rotten’s return to the “real world” was a bit of a let down.
And yes, the ending of Something Rotten was more final, with fewer loose ends, than the others, as though Fforde were leaving himself open to either write or not write any more Thursday Nexts, or to take some time off before returning to the series.
Thudlow Boink: thanks for the link to the older thread. I guess this could qualify as a one-year anniversary thread, then (if it continues).
One thing I couldn’t remember from the earlier books was whether Thursday had ever discussed her grandmother(s) before.
I’m a relatively non-critical reader, so I’d have to say I enjoyed all of the books pretty much equally. I do wonder if this quartet was plotted out as a single storyline, and if we’re now in for a bit of a break while Fforde comes up with a new story arc for Thursday.
According to http://www.jasperfforde.com, his next book The Big Over Easy, is due out any minute in the UK. However, it seems to star Jack Sprat, not Thursday Next. Still, it may have a connection.
He may go back to Thursday eventually, but I give him credit for stepping away. Otherwise, it could lose it’s freshness.
I rank fforde as one of my favorite current authors.
Her Gran visits her in the well of lost plots and helps her remember her husband.
I love the Thursday Next books and have the last one waiting for when I return home from Germany.
