Any Military Brats Out There?

(Sorry guys, I’m just a posting machine today. That’s what 5 weeks away from a computer will do to a person.)

Anyway, I’m curious: Am I the only military brat amongst the teeming millions?

My brat history, condensed:
Middle School in Ansbach Germany 1980-1983
High School in Heidelberg Germany 1983-1987

Most common question I ask: “What?”
Most common question I get: “Are you really hearing impaired?”

Ya I am a military Brat.

Most of my Dad’s postings were around Canada, but I got to spend four years in Europe during high school. That was pretty cool.

Dad was in the Coast Guard. Lived in Chicago, Cleveland, St Louis, Norfolk (2 homes), Washington DC (3 homes), Cape May NJ, San Francisco, and finally, Honolulu.

Kindergarten-5th grade: different school each year

3 different high schools: NJ, Cal, and Hawaii

Stability is a wonderful thing for a child.

I’m a military brat too, but we were lucky. My stepdad only got transferred once in his entire active duty career. Spent four years at Travis Air Force Base in No. CA, then spent the next four at Selfridge ANGB in S.E. Michigan. He’s a reservist now and they have sent him all over the world as part of his “two weeks a year” stint. The bad part about being a reservist is that he was in Europe all this last summer because of that crap in (the former) Yugoslavia. But, his unit was stationed in the South of France for the duration, so he got to go sightseeing in Nice, Cannes, basically all over the Cote D’Azur (sp?). I got one of those “My parents went to France and all I got was a lousy t-shirt” shirts, but it’s written in French (pretty cool, eh?)

When was your father at Travis I might know him? I spent the four longest years of my life stationed there. As for staying at Travis for a long time I know of one person who has been there for 18yrs his only assignment so far.

Ive always found it easer to get forgiveness rather than permission.

My dad was stationed at a Coast Guard base in Alameda, CA, but we lived in Fairfield, CA, not too far from Travis AFB (88-89)

Hey! I lived in Fairfield too! However, I moved away from there in 1976 to Vacaville, where my dad and stepmother lived (actually, they still live there). I spent one week at my dad’s in Vacaville, the next week at the base with my mom and stepdad, and etc and so on. When my stepdad got shipped out to Michigan (where he was born at and still had family out here), my dad decided it was best that me and my sister go with my mom to Michigan.

My stepdad was stationed at Travis from 1976 until 1980.

Let’s see. My dad was in Vietnam on and off from 1966-1971. My sister was born in 1967 and me in 1969, both the result of pregnancies conceived during Stateside rotations.

From 1971-73, we lived at Gila Bend AFB in Arizona.
1973-76, Fort Lee, Va.
1976-79, Ernst Ludwig Kaserne, Darmstadt, Germany.
1979-81, Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri

In 1981, my parents separated and we moved back to Ohio. My dad spent 1981-84 at Ft. Belvoir, Va., then 84-87 at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, where I spent the summer of 1984.

Hey, Hubzilla, when you were in Cleveland, did you have to go to the Navy Clinic in the Federal Building downtown for all your physicals and medical care? I remember getting all my immunizations there just before we went overseas.

Hey pldennison!

My husband is an Army brat too. I think he may have been at Fort Lee at the same time you were. He’s your sister’s age. Freaky! Can you tell me her name? I’ll ask him if he knew her.

Navy brat here. Dad was carrier sailor and we spent lots of time in WestPac and the Med. I could tell you the difference between * Forrestal * and * Kitty Hawk *- class aircraft carriers before I could do my ABCs.

Sometimes life is so great you just gotta muss up your hair and quack like a duck!

Not an Army brat myself, but I’ve raised 2. (If this is a challenge, see my screen name  )

80-84 Ft. Sam Houston TX (San Antonio)
84-88 Bethesda MD (Uniformed Services University of Heath Sciences)
88-91 - Walter Reed Army Medical Center DC
91-96 - Wuerzburg Germany (with a 5 month all expense paid trip to Taszar, Hungary for Operation Joint Endeavor)
96-98 - Walter Reed DC
98- pres - Ft. Bliss El Paso TX

I know this isn’t as many moves as many of you made, but

Kid #1 went to 3 different high schools (Germany, MD, & TX), including a move between Jr & Sr year.

Kid #2 fared better; she went 2 years in MD & is in her 2nd & final year of high school here.

pldennison,

I was in Cleveland 1974-5, but I was but a very wee lad and don’t remember much about it.

However, my Dad did work in the Federal Building for the Coast Guard.
