Any Nantucket or Vineyard dopers?

I am considering taking a long weekend on Nantucket or the Vineyard, off-season. I like the idea of going in March or April, for some reason.

What, if anything, is open in March or April? My husband and I would be carless, and would be interested in walks, drinks, restaurants, napping and reading. We are OK with cold weather.

Any advice for specific places to stay that will keep us within walking distance of a few things to do in the off season? Is this a crazy idea?

Glibness seems to be an art form here and lucky for me on this post.

There is absolutely nothing different between shoreline Cape Cod and island Cape Cod. Rent a room on the mainland shore, take a day trip over to the islands and talk aloofly about your weekend to all who ask afterward. It will cost you half and you WILL have double the fun… due to the fact you are not all pissed off that you spent 250 bucks a night for essential boredom.

You know what there is to do on the islands off-season? Drink. That is it.

You know what there is to do on the islands on-season? Drink with crowds. You might see Bill Clinton or David Letterman. That is it.

Don’t get me wrong. Any trip to either island is always fun, but there is absolutely no reason not to turn right back around after a few minutes.

You want memorable? Kayak over there from Falmouth.

I think Nantucket is lovely during the off season, especially if there’s snow. However, it is definitely on the deserted side (Though not nearly as deserted as it once was). If the idea of taking long, serene walks on the beach or around town while warmly bundled appeals to you, you’ll probably enjoy it. And of course if you don’t mind dressing warmly, the bike trails are fantastic any time of year. But yeah, if you’re not eager to partake in nature, there’s not a lot to do.
