My hometown in Wisconsin has the only restaurant I know of which features Netherlands cuisine: things like a nice bowl of Snert, some metworst, croquetten, olybollen, and a few other dishes which escape me, mainly involving potatos, peas, applesauce and pork. De Zwaan serves it up in a nice dining room surrounded by Delft tiles and pictures of previous years “Holland Fest” queens.
Any other restaurants around featuring Dutch cuisine? Somewhere in Holland, Michigan? Ames, Iowa?
Thanks, tapioca. That’s a helpful link. It is interesting to note that this list of things “hollander” lists exactly one dutch restaurant and 22 indonesian restaurants.
Hey, I live in the Netherlands, and I can understand the hankering for a good Rijsttafel, and Oliebollen aren’t bad. But actually missing something like Bitterballen, Kroketten, Stampot and Boerenkool are just beyond me.
Heck, English cuisine is better than Dutch. Why do you think the list includes 22 Indonesian and one Dutch restaurant.
Living with a bunch of Dutch guys for 6 months last year, and not knowing how to cook at all at the time, I came to the conclusion that Dutch cuisine consists of meat and boiled potatoes with different gravies.
Oh yeah… and chocolate spread (Nutella) for breakfast.
I vaguely remember one in Greenville NC or thereabouts.
I also ate at a place in Pella, Iowa that had some Dutch dishes.
And though I long shared the opinion that there’s no such thing as Dutch cuisine other than what was borrowed/stolen from other cultures, some things are uniquely Dutch: frikandellen, kale mashed with potatoes, kroketten, raw herring to name a few. And though they pretty much all are disgusting, I kinda miss 'm.
