Any other kimono-wearing Dopers?

Anyone else collect and wear kimono? Got pictures?

I started collecting kimono about two years ago. I still can’t tie a drum bow, but I’ll occasionally wear one of my informal kimono to work or over to my parents’ house or something. I also have an hippari (peasant shirt) that I wear fairly regularly and I’ll wear my haori with anything.

Since starting to wear kimono, I’ve discovered I like pink. I’m actually having to work to get non-pink kimono. I don’t have any really formal kimono. My most formal is a crested iromuji, which is suitable for parties and stuff. It’s also my only spring-weight kimono, which is annoying because lately I’ve been wanting to wear one but it’s too warm.

My favorite yukata

I’ve learned everything from websites or books. I can’t yet read Japanese, so it makes it that much harder. No, I’m not Japanese or even Asian, but I do have the right figure for it. I’ve had Japanese people say I look very nice and be impressed that I dressed myself. It’s not really that hard, but it does take me about 40 minutes.

My girlfriend’s mother makes kimono (in Tokyo), so if you have any specific questions, I can ask her for you.

I have a few yukata, and I’ve worn kimono for formal occasions, but I don’t own any. Being a man, there are fewer styles for me anyway.

I indulged in a yukata for my birthday last month. I don’t have a proper obi for it, but I mostly wear it at home anyway. It’s a simple motif of dragons in indigo. A little masculine maybe, but I like it.

I’m actually on a kimono forum, so I’m covered. But thanks.

Yeah, but guys are HOT in kimono. This guy I swear is the Japanese Johnny Depp. I’ve got other links of men doing fun stuff too, if you’re interested.

Y’know, now I’ll have to tie you down and dress you properly. Mwahahaha… Unfortunately, I don’t think I have an obi that matches that. Red would be perfect, but I haven’t got one. I’d have to actually get up and check to be sure.

I would dress like this (and have), but not in a kimono.

jika-tabi
nikkapokka

My nikkapokka didn’t last as long as one would expect a pair of clothes intended for construction workers and they always were a tad short on me. I need to get a new pair.

I’ve been tempted to get a pair of jika-tabi. I hate normal shoes but I end up wearing socks to keep my feet warm.

You look gorgeous in them.

No, but I can get you a bonobo wearing diapers.

More possibilities, believe me.

I’ve worn a gi/tabi/obi. Does that count?

Quite nice, tiger girl. Very beautiful choices, they suit you… literally. Your beautiful curves are emphasized by their perfect fit.

I have curves? When’d that happen? =^.^= (And Tyger, if you please. Or Silver or Silvercat or S’kat.)

You look terrific, Tyger! May I ask, where do you buy your kimono? I’ve been tempted to try and sew some after reading Dalby’s book.

You’re hippy. Are you not?

Otherwise, the fit of the kimono adds some subtle fullness where you might not otherwise have extreme curves.

D’oh …I don’t mean hippy in a bad way. Just that you seem to have some nice hips and curves. Nice feminine lines there.

I got most of mine off eBay. There’s also a couple of stores down in Torrance and one in China Town. If you’re interested in kimono, check out the forum on immortalgeisha.com They’ve got a huge knowledge bank and lots of experts. If nothing else, there’s a tool linked from there that’ll help you buy/make the correct size. I keep meaning to make stuff, but I don’t really sew.
