silk kimono tailoring

One week ago I made a find at a local resale clothing store: a hand dyed women’s silk kimono, never worn, with the original Japanese dyer’s label still inside.

A friend of mine who knows a thing or two about the subject says it’s the sort of piece a middle class married woman would wear on special occasions. It’s well made.

It also fits perfectly. It just isn’t quite finished. A few of the seams are still held together with basting stitches and it’s missing an obi.

I’d like to find a tailor or seamstress who has experience working with kimonos and access to compatible fabric for the obi. My local shopkeepers can’t help and several Boolean search combinations at Northernlight led nowhere. I even paid a visit to Little Tokyo in Los Angeles.

Any advice?

There’s a kimono seamstress in Kinokuniya Plaza in San Francisco, I once purchased a nice yukata there, but alas, I can’t remember the name of the shop. Perhaps an SF doper could look it up for you.
FYI, an obi is not usually made from the same fabric as the kimono, so you have plenty of latitude to use pretty much any fabric that you like.
