Any Pro Wrestling Fans in the Audience? (Multiple promotions) (Part 2)

Kevin Sullivan is dead at 74.

The last time I saw him on TV about 4 years ago was on a Nat Geo show “The Legend of Mick Dodge” and he and his current wife, a former wrestler herself were living semi-off grid in almost in the forest of Washington …

I only ever got to see him in the flesh once, at an ROH taping in 2016, when he was managing Punishment Martinez (Damian Priest). Even at that age he was a scary looking guy.

Ran across him at a restaurant in Florida. First time I saw him was on Gordon Solies’ show when he and Haystack Calhoun lost the Florida tag titles to the original Hollywood Blonds.

I remember when he was The Games Master in WCW, about the time D&D was becoming the talk show panic subject of the week. He wore his Satan worship garb, and the announcers were blabbing “You’ve read about them in the paper! He’s the Games Master, and he’s in control!”

Eventually, as booker Sullivan put Chris Benoit in an angle where he stole Nancy, Sullivan’s wife, from him. Then it turned out to be true. Later, Benoit went nuts and killed Nancy and himself.

Sullivan was also the reason Brian Pillman left WCW for WWE, and then he met his tragic end. It’s kind of chilling that his Satanist gimmick led to so many bloodbaths.

Sorry, I know I’m coming in late for the SummerSlam talk, but I did watch it last week and had a few thoughts. I came in late and missed Rhea vs. Liv and Sami vs. Bron.

LA Knight won. Good. Maybe he can get the push he earned a year ago now. And Logan Paul can hopefully go away permanently? I hope? That f***** is a scandal waiting to happen.

Loved Gunther vs. Damian Priest. MOTY contender to my eye. Fantastic old school, hard-hitting classic pro wrestling match. I have to say I have been lukewarm on Damien for a little while now. I was very impressed with him in this match. I recently learned he’s older than I thought he was. He’s kind of reminding me of DDP a little bit in that he seems to be coming into his prime very late. Looking forward to seeing what he does in the near future.

R.I.P. Kevin Sullivan.

I only got to know him in WCW in the mid-90s. And I haven’t seen much of his early Florida master of darkness phase. I did have the opportunity to watch the Sullivan/Benoit rivalry play out in real time. Dungeon of doom. Good times.

Another true legend gone.

Ethan Page vs. Joe Hendry is already making me laugh. I consider Wes Lee and Pete Dunne’s involvement in the storyline unnecessary, so Hendry has to win their upcoming triple threat to continue this classic feud in the making.

Brings to mind to this old fart the Paul Jones vs. Jimmy Valiant feud in NWA Mid Atlantic many moons ago. Jones would go postal whenever Valiant’s music played, and Page has such great over-the-top reactions to Hendry’s music. I don’t think WWE is going to go so far as to have TNA talent win WWE gold, but they could always buy out his contract while the feud develops.

Afa Anoa’i of the Wild Samoans has died at 81.

wow, maybe this generation will literally be the new bloodline eh?

Jacob Fatu returned on SmackDown, and was all the difference in The Bloodline’s beatdown of Roman Reigns which prevented him from regaining the Ula Fata for more than a few seconds.

The Street Profits defeated DIY to become #1 contenders to the WWE Tag Team Championship.

#RicochetIsAllElite

And he’s expected to make an appearance at All In on Sunday.

ehh it’s just ricochet who in the last year or two has only had good matches with logan paul aj styles and a couple of others…

Before The Bloodline defended the WWE Tag Team Title tonight (match still in progress as I post this), Solo Sikoa ordered Jacob Fatu to give his title to Tama Tonga.

Tama Tonga and Tonga Loa are the ones defending against The Bloodline. Wikipedia editors are currently speculating that they’re doing a Freebird Rule thing, but Solo was very clear that Jacob was being promoted to his personal enforcer and can’t be a tag champion at the same time.

They’re gonna turn Jacob face and partner him with Roman, aren’t they?

They can’t turn him face too soon can they? It feels like turning him at any point before the end of the year, or WrestleMania next year, would be too soon.

Well, clearly Roman can’t take on all four members of the TEMU Bloodline by himself, and I think it would be a mistake to have The Usos and Sami come crawling back to him.

Here’s the full card for All In, BTW;

  • AEW World Championship: Swerve Strickland (c) vs. Bryan Danielson; if Danielson loses he must retire
  • Casket match for the TNT Championship: Jack Perry (c) vs. Darby Allin
  • American Championship: MJF (c) vs. Will Ospreay
  • AEW Women’s World Championship: Toni Storm (c) vs. Mariah May
  • TBS Championship: Mercedes Mone (c) vs. Dr. Britt Baker DMD
  • AEW Tag Team Championship: The Young Bucks (c) vs. FTR vs. the Acclaimed
  • Ladder match for the AEW Trios Championship: The Patriarchy (c) vs. Bang Bang Gang vs. House of Black vs. PAC, Claudio Castagnoli, & Wheeler Yuta
  • FTW Championship: Chris Jericho (c) vs. HOOK; if HOOK loses he cannot challenge for the title again for as long as Jericho is champion
  • Gauntlet match for an AEW World Championship match: Ricochet vs. 20 TBA
  • Kris Statlander & Stokeley Hathaway vs. Willow Nightingale & Tomohiro Ishii; winner gets to choose the stipulation for Statlander vs. Nightingale at All Out

I won’t be able to watch live, but I’ll try to catch a replay if I can avoid being spoiled in the meantime.

It would certainly throw the angle from SummerSlam, where Jacob “hurt his leg” after the dive on Cody, into a new light. Jacob has been a Roman/Heyman plant the whole time?

There have been reports that WWE is interested in getting back to more long-term storytelling. Maybe an example of that? I’m probably being overly optimistic.

College football is back in swing, and Pat McAfee was in a preshow for the FSU vs. GA Tech game, in a group of panelists predicting who would win upcoming games and conferences. Since the game was taking place in Dublin Ireland, Seamus was the guest panelist. I guess he was the most famous Irish sports celebrity available.

When called to predict who would win the FSU vs. GA Tech game, Seamus was the only one to pick Georgia Tech, because their punter David Shanahan was from Kerry. So, he had to go with the local talent. Turns out he was right. Tech kicked a FG in the final seconds to win the game.

McAfee annoys me. Reminds me of JBL starting to announce and thinking he was still part of the show in the ring. Announcers are like lighting, makeup, and costumes, they are meant to enhance the performance, not participate in it.
