I just noticed that Madden 13 is not being released on the PS2, which was probably the last chance for anyone to get a new PS2 game. Is the PS2 officially dead in every area of the world? If so, what was the last produced game? Wikipedia does not list one, which makes me think it is not yet considered finished.
What was the last released game? Any forthcoming still?
The PS2 still has a pretty massive installed base, so even if only half of those people would consider buying a new game for it, you’re still looking at as many or more people considering your game than if you made a PS3 exclusive.
And IME, sports games seem to be the last titles to go on anygeneration of consoles. Saw it with PSX, as well. NHL 2K2 was the last release on the Dreamcast.
Any idiot can apply a roster update to the same shitty graphics engine, and churn out a few thousand plastic discs. That’s part of my beef with buying EA’s NHL every year, and why I don’t do it anymore.
Who could pass up such hit titles as Don 2: The Game (the video game adaptation of an Indian crime thriller) and The Secrets of Adoulin (an expansion to the 11-year old Final Fantasy MMO that originally released for PC and the PS2)? The Xbox had some winners released for it after it had died, too, like Ratatouille and the long-awaited North American rerelease of Mashed: Drive to Survive, whose Wikipedia article optimistically refers to it as “one of the best multiplayer games created.”
I was at an exhibit on video games at the Ontario Science Centre, where they had pretty much every video console ever made. You could play most of them, it was a very cool hands on show.
The 2600 had some software that I am pretty sure was released in 2010. It wasn’t usable but it had something to do with poetry. It came in a huge box and with a book as well. It wasn’t a one off thing and I can’t imagine that it would have sold for less than $100. Unfortunately, I don’t remember what it was called or have any idea where you buy it.
ETA: Of course I find it once I have already hit submit…It is called A Slow Year.
The Sega Genesis got a newly English translated, commercially released video game called Beggar Prince in the year 2006. The game was originally released on the megadrive in 1996 in China, but never in English. So someone actually fired up new cartridge factory somewhere and printed out new Beggar Prince in English cartridges in 2006 after retranslating it and fixing many glitches. It was the first game to be released commercially for the Genesis since 1998. The Genesis came out in North America in 1989. If Beggar Prince was the last new Genesis game released in North America (there might be even more since then) that gives a total of 17 years of game releases!
The Playstation 2 needs to put out a game at least until 2017 to match this, by my calculations.
EDIT: I see that a new genesis game was commercially released in North America in 2011. PS2 has a ways to go. And if you don’t count retranslated games as a new release, check out Pier Solar and the Great Architects which was released in 2010 and was specifically programmed for the Sega Genesis, commercially released, and not available on any other platforms as far as I know.
