Now that we are on the 8th generation consoles of PS4, Xbox one, Wii U are games still released on the 7th or even 6th generation consoles? I thought even when the PS3 was out some games were still released on PS2 format.

Kinda doubt anyone’s developing new games for the original Xbox or PS2 at this point, but who knows.
Yeah, e.g. Shadow of Mordor for PS3/XBox360. I don’t think there’s any PS2 era games out recently; the last (US) was Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 in Sep-2013. Xbox was Madden NFL 09 in August 2008. There might be some homebrew games though. My memory matches yours: PS2 games were still semi-regularly coming out after PS3.

Some indie teams still release games for the Dreamcast.
They’re still cranking out games for Nintendo DS and Wii - but I can’t imagine they’ll carry on too much longer. Those systems have had their online capabilities turned off as of earlier this year, and there’s not been a notable release in quite awhile. Shovelware and junky ports and kiddie tie-ins. The Wii is still on the shelves (I think, I saw the “mini” for sale this summer, at least) but the DS consoles aren’t being produced or sold anymore at all.
