Are there any current hosted horror shows like the old Chiller Theater or Elvira or even Mystery Science Theater 3000? I need a good cheesey sci-fi/horror fix.
I was wondering if there was a version of Chiller Theater in many cities, but Wikipedia, as usual, provided the info.
I remember the Pittsburgh one fondly. Staying up and watching Chiller Theater was one of only 2 things I had in common with my dad. The second, of course, was Steeler football
Check out some of the MSTies current efforts, like Cinematic Titanic, or the more prolific Rifftrax.
Svengoolie (nee: Son of Svengoolie), out of Chicago, likes to point out that at least one of the guys from MST3K grew up in the Chicago burbs and was exposed to him (Rich Koz) and his predecessor (Jerry G Bishop) practically from birth (has it really been since 1970?). Bishop [del]stole[/del] acquired the idea from the great Ernie Anderson (“Tonight on ABC ‘Charlie’s Angels’ is followed by ‘The Love Boat.’”), whose Ghoulardi is still remembered by denizens of Cleveland at a time when Cleveland was pretty memorable.
Okay, Anderson gave Bishop permission to use the concept–they were in different markets. And some years back Bishop allowed Koz to lose the “Son of” moniker.
Some time back I heard a Jerry G Bishop radio aircheck and I found that Koz still uses some of the drops Bishop used 45 years ago!
Chicago, and a bunch of other cities, also had Creature Features. Here’s a partial list of of movies they showed, courtesy Wikipedia.
Elvira, Mistress of the Dark! Movie Macabre! Man, Cassandra Peterson rocked…
I should link to a jpeg, but my kid’s cuddled up in bed with me- one of you guys want to do the honors?
What’s Joe Bob Briggs up to now? He used to have such a show on The Movie Channel and later on TNT.
Also, I think Rob Zombie does something similar on occasion on IFC.
Milwaukee, 80’-84’, Saturday afternoons:
Shock Theatre with host Tolouse NoNeck.
He’s the head guy at The Wittenburg Door, which claims to be the only religious satire magazine. Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t, but I’m sure it’s the only one that’s funny.
How 'bout YouTube instead?
Forgive the highjackiness of this, but I remember a completely different series called “Chiller” and it’s driving me nuts (arrrgh). I looked at the Wiki page and also the Youtube video but it’s not the same show. As I recall there wasn’t a host and the intro was just some eerie music as the word “Chiller” would appear in that creepy Munsters style type. Also there was the typical scary dude’s voice booming “CHILLER”. What mostly stands out though is the picture they would show just before the show would resume after the commercial. It had a red background and it was an evil, grinning face; a shrunken head I think. It had long black hair and maybe pointy teeth. Does that ring a bell with anyone? This would have been in the early / mid 70s and I watched it on channel 13 at 3:00 on Sunday afternoons (Southern CA). And as long as I’m completely derailing the thread, does anyone remember Sinister Cinema? Again, the Wiki page doesn’t jibe with what I remember at all.
Thanks to anyone who can relieve my brain of this nagging memory!
Kansas City used to have a horror host called Crematia Mortem. I loved her bits during the commercials, where she talked to an offscreen servant named Rasputin.
Pittsburgh has This awesome show which I always forget about. Luckily, they also stream online, so you can watch it whenever. I’ve shaken a few of those guys hands, as they run the Biggest Zombie Walk ever every year at the Monroeville Mall.
What’s your location, ZomZom?
I miss Joe Bob. Rifftrax is a lot of fun, though, I’m hoping they’ll do Twilight. How could they resist, right?
Shit, I remember that show!
Can’t give you any more information than that, I’m afraid, but dude, I hadn’t thought of that in more than 20 years.
I remember it, too. Only I remember it in the mid-60’s, SoCal. Friday nights were made for Chiller. I remember seeing a couple of old horror flicks that I can’t find to this day.
Elvira has some DVDs available of her, hosting bad horror movies. God, I miss her, those were good times when Mr. Salinqmind and I first got together, eating pizza, watching Elvira at midnight. Good times.
TBS in the earlier days had an afternoon movie hosted by Commander USA. Retired superhero, a real goofball. He was the spitting image, stogie, mask, and all, of that Watchman character - maybe he was the inspiration for that character. They showed some cult-ish movies that I have never ever once seen since!
It was USA Network, not TBS- and you’re thinking of The Comedian.
Comm. USA began in 1985. WATCHMEN was published in 1986. Hmmmm!
Could ya give us a basic description of them?
