I don’t really expect to find anyone else here who knows these guys, but it would be great if anyone did.
They were a badass Scottish folk band from the '70s. Their leader, Andy Stewart eventually went solo, but he was never as good as the whole group. Their live album is one of the most awesome musical collections ever laid down on to tape. AMAZING.
Any other fans out there, pipe up! Hopefully some of you who aren’t will order that CD and find out what I mean. If all else fails go to your favorite forbidden file swapping tool and get some of the songs off of that live album.
Me for Silly Wizard! I’ve loved Celtic music for years (and particularly enjoy tracing some of the old ballads sung in the Appalachians back to their old world roots) but I didn’t run across SW until about a year ago. I did get my mitts on that live album (well, CD), but that’s all I have by them. I didn’t know about Andy Stewart’s solo work, either. I think my favorite off that album has to be ‘The Blackbird’, although ‘Rambling Rover’ runs a very close second.
Which of their other works would you recommend, or of Stewart’s?
Oh There’s sober men a’ plenty!
and drunkards nearly twenty,
there are men of nearly ninety that have never yet kissed a girl
But gi’me a Ramblin’Rover frae’ Orkney down to Dover
We will roam the country over and together we’ll rule the world!!!
You get the picture! God I love Silly Wizard! Ihave seen em a few times here in Chicago and wish to hell they were still touring. Their version of the Blackbird is still one of my favorites.
I love Celtic music and Scottish in particular. Have you listened to Kornog? If not, get out and order as much as you can! Ar Seizh Avel and Premiere are the favorites so far, their latest is good but lacks some of the intensity. Not surprising since it has been many many years till this latest one!
