I just had some fun at this site, wherein you can overlay a map of the Lower 48 US States over a map of Europe. Are there any similar applications?
I’d love to drag a map of Ireland across a map of the globe to see the relative size of different countries and territories.

Not an answer to your question, but your post totally reminded me of this.
Even cooler, drag the US map until Florida overlays Italy, and the Gulf Coast lines up with the Mediterranian coast. Europe is essentially “The South,” and Spaniards are really Texans, or is it Texans are really Spaniards? Wait, the languages are almost the same. Naples Italy and Naples Florida are in similar places. Ohhh, freaky. Hey look, New Orleans is French. This is fun.
