Any studies on light sleepers/deep sleepers?

I did some searching and didn’t find an answer anywhere on SD, but that doesn’t mean its out there.

Is anyone aware of any studies on light sleepers and deep sleepers as in what causes a person to be one or the other? Can you change from one to the other?

I ask because my house has the light sleeper/deep sleeper marriage and its very difficult to deal with. If I sniffle too loud the wife wakes up. On the other hand I once slept 20 minutes through a fire alarm that was blaring outside my apartment door. (thankfully there was no fire).

I would like to be more of a light sleeper. When I travel for business I have to leave the lights on and the TV blaring in my hotel room to make sure I don’t fall asleep too deeply and can get up for work. (Sorry if you have ever been my neighbor). Although that’s not a very good solution for the house.
