I picked up this mug at Goodwill, and I wanted to learn more about it. I can’t find any trace of it on the internet, though. It’s a Six Flags promotional thing, clearly, and I can find dozens of examples of other DC hero (and indeed, other Superman) mugs, but not this one. IT’s a really weird style too, almost Ed Hardy-esque. Not at all what I think of tfor Superman. Joker, sure.
So, anyway, what is it? Is there any chance it’s a prototype for a product that never made it to market?
Not a Superman memorabilia expert, but looking at the art style and the imagery, it look it it might be either a tie-in or inspired by the big “Death & Return of Superman” storyline from 1992-3.
IIRC the big collectables in superhero drinking vessels are glasses with etched designs dating from the 60s to the 80s.
Poking around, it looks like Six Flags has released a lot of edgy-looking Superman merchandise over the years, a lot of it tied in to either the Superman:The Ride of Steel roller coaster or the most recent series of edgy Superman movies.
Is the DC logo anywhere on the mug? I ask because the font is like nothing I’ve ever seen used for Superman. My thought is this homemade, originally sold at a flea market, or something.
It’s got “SUPERMAN: TM & c DC Comics. (s11)” on the bottom so it’s legit. Six Flags and Superman are very entwined.
On a side note, does anyone know what the (s11) after the copyright means? I assume it has something to do with the “version” of the copyright or something? I can’t seem to find an explanation online but plenty of use of (s11) and (sX) other numbers.
With the way Six Flags puts out stuff I’m not surprised you can’t find anything on line about it. Every one of their little stores tends to have different items for sale. Plus, almost all the Six Flags properties tends to have a Superman themed ride with a store attached to it.
Since Six Flags has been using the Superman licensing since the late 90s I wouldn’t be surprised if there were 100+ different types of mugs floating around.
