OTOH, you can get yourself a nice used trumpet for not too much money. I’ve bid on a few on EBay drunk late at night and never paid more than a hundred dollars or so for some very nice horns. I currently have about five or six cornets and trumpets on hand.
For a real bargain, though, buy a trombone. The fewer mechanical parts on an instrument, the less you pay. Saxophone = expensive; trumpet = inexpensive. A tenor 'bone only has a slide manipulated by the right hand, so they’re downright cheap.
