Any vets in the house? I’ve spoken to our vet but I’m looking for a second (internet) opinion. I have a 14 year old chihuahua with cushings disease and a thyroid problem. We’ve been treating with Trilostane and thyro-tabs for a few years now and she’s a happy, healthy dog. She was quite heavy before we started the meds (16 lbs) and at this point she’s lost half her body weight. She moves better, enjoys walks more, and doesn’t oops on the carpet anymore.
All good right? Except that due to a money blip I lagged on refilling her scripts and she went a month without the Trilostane and seemed just as fine. I’m wondering about the pros/cons of discontinuing medication for the cushings.
All along my vet has said medicate or don’t, either is fine considering how expensive the drugs can be. So now I’m wondering if the weight loss might have done more for symptom relief than the meds? Or maybe it takes longer than a month for the meds to really be out of her system? I’ve refilled the prescription for the next few months, but I’m trying to figure out whether I’ll keep doing so in the future.
She’s my favorite dog in the whole world and I want her to stay healthy and happy for the last few years of her life, but I also don’t want to spend $100 per month if I don’t have to.
