I picked it up on Sunday and I can’t say I’m impressed. I’ve played for a little over an hour and it hasn’t been much besides bumbling around looking for indistinct pathways to the next screen. Haven’t seen even a single creature yet.
I’ve been watching the playthrough by theRadBrad on YouTube. 1, 2, and 3 were amazing games (1 and 3 being my favorites). The Room I couldn’t even care enough to finish. I did pick up Homecoming, and the bosses were awesome, but otherwise it was really disappointing. Downpour looks like SH is still off the rails to me in that sense.
But I’ve really enjoyed watching the playthrough. So far as the playthrough has shown, you’re not going to see an overwhelming amount of combat. Thankfully (to me) it looks like it has gone back to its “average Joe” combat style rather than the more technical fighting available in The Room and Homecoming. But what I’ve watched isn’t even halfway through the game. Shit tends to get pretty real late-game.
Just wanted to add at this point I think this is a worthy addition to the series and I am going to stop watching the playthrough so I can buy it and play it myself.
Combat looks on par to the first and second games so far—that is, mostly avoidable, and difficult.
Are you getting lag issues?
No lag issues to speak of. I do have a couple other complaints. Remember the scene in 3 where Heather has to run from the mysterious deadly red light in the fun house? In Downpour, that is basically all you do in the other world. The first time it was entertaining. Starting with the second time, it became “not this shit again!” In the earlier games, for some reason, I never resented having to spend a lot of time looking for a door. In Downpour, it seems like that is all I’m doing without much else going on. There isn’t any suspense. It’s just staggering around in the dark clicking A until something happens.
I know what you’re talking about. I watched 22 videos of the playthrough and that didn’t come up again, to my recollection.
I didn’t like that in 3. I hated it in 2, as well, where you’re running to the elevator with Maria (fucking escort mission bullshit) and Pyramid Head kills her very easily which counts as failure which is totally ridiculous because she dies at the end of that scene anyway.
The world after that part is very reminiscent of 2 and Homecoming. I’d be interested to hear your opinion after you get to the town, as I won’t be buying it until the price comes down anyway (got a serious backlog of games).
Reviving the thread to note that I sat down with my tablet open to a walk-through and ground through the game. It did, eventually, improve and start feeling a bit like a Silent Hill game. The boss fight with Wheelman was a lot of fun. I saw three of the possible endings and completed all of the side quests that can be completed on the first play through. Cverall, I have no desire to play the game again.
