Anybody else find the entire Straight Dope website M.I.A. yesterday?

All day yesterday I kept getting a “Cannot find server” for both the Straight Dope Home Page and the message boards. I’m used to having the boards go down, or time out. But this was the entire Straight Dope website. It didn’t matter whether I used the URL window, or Favorites, or History. Anything I tried–“Cannot find server”.

At first I thought the Reader must have pulled the plug, to punish us for all our Post Count parties. Then I heard there was a big fire in Rogers Park, so I thought maybe the attic that houses the server burned down.

I finally went over to OpalCat’s board and found a couple other Dopers in a similar predicament, so it wasn’t just me.

But today everything seems to be all hunky-dory. So?

Now I’m thinking maybe it was something to do with the California blackouts. Could Juno have routed its stuff through a California server that just didn’t have no juice to run it yesterday?

Yes, I got that “Cannot find” message for awhile, but also with several other websites.

yep, I noticed it too.

but then it came back and I could breath again.

It worked fine for me all day …

Yup, scary to find out just how addicted one is, isn’t it? I somehow kept getting an image of the SDMB server as the kind of wonderful old family dog who is friendly and willing and all that but creaks and limps most arthritically along.

Maybe we need something like the British wartime poster saying “Is your journey REALLY necessary?”

Of course, this post isn’t really necessary, either. Rats!

Here in Montana (where we’re making a killing selling electricity to those silly Californians), I also was having problems with the entire straightdope.com domain, but no total outages. Maybe my browser/connection is just a little more patient about declaring timeouts.

      • I couldn’t reach it at all either. I understand that there’s obvious times this may happen, such as lunch hours and coffee breaks, but it timed out all day, not sending anything. The rest of my 'net was 100% (functional). - MC

Chronos lives in Montana?!

Anyway, I could get in easily. I also live in Montana (Havre area). Whereabouts do you live, Chron?

Bozeman. I’m doing my grad work here at Montana State.

It is surprising how many Montanans there are here, isn’t it?

Uhhhhhh M.I.A. ?

Well, with winters that can get to -20F with severe windchills, snow drifts that make driving a chore, plus hours from town to town, no, I can’t imagine why any Montanan would get into the Internet.

Chronos, you’re a credit to the state. I’m glad you’re around.

MIA=Missing In Action. Military term.

Fired this one off too quick. The board got me. Dang.
