Anybody else not get the appeal of sandals?

Spend some time in Dubai when it is 110° and 90% humidity and you’ll get rid of closed shoes in a hurry.

Are you including flip-flops in the same category with sandals? Soon as the weather turns it’s flip flops for me, or my Boston Birks. Never sandals (mandals).

Warm, moist body parts are gross (with a few exceptions).

Huh. I guess I don’t have hot feet. I like to wear socks to bed in the winter even though I prefer bare feet in bed. I tend to “run warm” compared to others often, though. My hands are always warm, and I prefer weather and home temperatures to be below 70F. But I wear closed shoes most of the time. I do have a couple pairs of sandals, but my feet still get tacky and a little sweaty, so I prefer shoes and socks.

In the city, too, I have found that unshod feet get really dirty, my sandals get a weird crud buildup and I need to wash them frequently, and my feet get dirty with city smeg. The older I get, the more I prefer just shoes and socks. I have cute feet, I want them to stay that way. The skin stays softer with shoes and socks, too. I get more dryness and callouses if I wear sandals too often.

People with crusty, funky feet should also not show them to others. Ew.

Socks and sandals look ridiculous, that’s why fashionistas mock them. A special mockery is reserved for people who jam flip-flop thongs between their socked toes. If you need to wear socks, you should have some sort of shoe on.

I’m not a fan of sandals for myself, mostly because I have ugly man-feet. We’re talking hobbit-hairy here.

Last summer, I got a magnificent pair of Clarks boat shoes.

Not my exact pair, but pretty close in style and appearance.

They are designed to be worn without socks. They breath wonderfully. They are comfortable.

Find a nice pair of boat shoes, if you are a man that wants to wear something without socks. They look and feel great.

What exceptions might there be?

Oh.

Never mind.

This pretty much sums it up for me.

I hate shoes. I wear them because they are they appropriate footwear for certain activities (work, running, hiking, etc.) but whenever possible I wear either my Keen Venice sandals or (preferably) my Kinos (best sandals ever).

Shoes are hot and confining and uncomfortable for my 14EE feet. Sandals are cool and comfortable and protect me from hot surfaces and sharp stuff.

I wear sandals when I’m traveling by air. They’re easy to take off and put back on for inspection in the airport, and they’re more comfortable during long flights.

I have big stupid man feet (I’m a woman). Sandals somehow make me feel a little bit dantier. I keep my nails neatly polished, too and I do like to show off my toes.

I’ve been wearing my sandals every day since the end of April, even though it’s been about 50 degrees a lot.

I just found this shoe company and bought 2 pairs of wide sandals and so far I am in LOVE http://www.hotterusa.com/

Don’t these get stinky as all getout?

Reading your response made me think more about the topic of the OP, and I’m in agreement with you.

As someone who commutes in the city, I tend to wear socks and sneakers to work and then change into my sandals there, if I am wearing sandals for the day. I walk a mile + each way, and any sandals that are appropriate to wear with work outfits would not be good choices for that commute.

[Hijack]OMG These are so cute. I think I hate you ZipperJJ, I didn’t need more shoe-crack[/hijack]

Transparent alpine ski boots – yes, they exist (but you’d have to cut off the lip of the liner). Might not be the best in which to walk about town.

I get to admire my pedicure so I love sandals, duh!

Those Keens look really bad but for some reason they are popular

This is the time of year that one starts seeing bare feet and painted toenails. And I usually get the heebie jeebies a few time before getting used to seeing the large pale foot with red toenail polish. The toes remind me of grubs, pale slimy grubs with a red squishy head it just freaks me out a bit to see that, no offense to anyone. It’s just been a long winter.

Put on some sandals, Chela. That’ll cheer you right up.

Another one who has very hot feet. Right now I am wearing slacks with a very pretty pair of sandals. I just can’t stand them to be encased, and my office runs hot anyway.

Granted, I don’t have pale feet. I thought pale skin was supposed to be beautiful. But mine are brown-ish. And they are well maintained.

I don’t think I’ve ever felt uncomfortable due to hot feet (rather than just generally being hot all over), even in temperatures over 40C while wearing hiking boots. My wife, on the other hand, thinks I’m mad if I wear shoes and socks once the temperature goes above 20C. She can’t wait to get open-toed shoes on in spring.

I think it’s largely a gender divide, although I do see lots of men wearing sandals, too. Yes, I wear sandals in the summer if I’m just out in the garden (it’s quicker than putting on proper shoes), or on the beach, but wearing them in the city is just odd.

I hate wearing shoes, and walk/drive around as much as possible without them. Sandals are the closest I can get to being barefoot. My ideal pair would be something fashionable that is just a strap over the foot and a sole.

I’ve seen plastic stick on soles at a beach store, with no straps of any kind, but there were a little too pricey to just try out.

Oh! And no flip-flops. I hate the noise they make.
