I watch very little network TV – pretty much the Simpsons on Sunday night is it. Last night was an exception. Maybe once a quarter I’ll catch Letterman or Leno.
So, the Mrs. and I were sitting there and Dave wasn’t really very funny, so I switched to Leno.
Cameron Diaz was on.
WOW! The outfit she was wearing took cleavage to a whole new level. And the cameras were doing their best to emphasize her, um, chestal exposure.
I was shocked – in a very pleasant, arousing way. I mean, I knew standards for nudity on the networks had relaxed somewhat, but I thought that just applied to Dennis Franz’s ass.
I watched it. I think Cameron Diaz is a good “giggly” actress, but that interview made me realize she is a complete and total ditz. I thought she did a good job in “Vanilla Sky”, but I will never be able to watch her in a semi-serious role again. Blargh.
Oh yeah, the Boyfriend watched it too, totally mesmerized and waiting for an accidental slippage.
She looked best back in The Mask. Lately, whenever I see her, I’m not impressed. In all the scenes from the new Charley’s Angels where she’s dancing around, she looks fine, but all the close ups of her face look kinda scary. She really needs to eat a cheeseburger.
Same thing with Drew Barrymore. Seeing them interviewed together repeatedly in the recent CA2 publicity blitz has been painful. Fortunately, my wife has given me an “out” and I no longer have to see this dreaded movie with her. Whew!
It’s pretty funny that Leno constantly does jokes about how every woman in L.A. has had breast implants, but absolutely none of the major movie stars seem to be enhanced. (Obviously, I’m not counting Pamela Anderson and Carmen Electra as major movie stars.)
In fact, with a few exceptions - Salma Hayek, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Drew Barrymore - most of today’s movie stars (and almost everybody on TV too - think of Debra Messing) are very small busted. Of course, when you’re six feet tall and a size zero, it would be hard to be otherwise naturally.
There’s a weird disconnect there that I can’t explain.
Allow me to take a crack at explaining it.
I think what we’re talking about here is the difference between high art and low art. IMHO, an actress who goes out and gets breast implants is saying something about her level of acting talent. For one reason or another, she feels she needs an edge to compete professionally.
Most of those actresses who do get implants (but not all; Melanie Griffith is one exception) are fighting for B-movie roles. Few, if any of them, think of acting as “art”; they’re more into “showbiz,” and the culture of high fashion, fame, and media attention. Carmen Electra and Pamela Anderson are perfect examples of this.
As a counter-example, think of Catherine Zeta-Jones and Kate Hudson. Those two aren’t giving away anything in the looks department, but they aren’t running out to pose for Playboy. They have no need to; their careers are not built on just their looks.
This explains why the “really big” movies and TV stars rarely have breast implants. True stardom requires true talent. Getting breast implants is a signal, both to their recipient and to others, that a woman is probably lacking in that department.
I’m not saying the implants cost a person professionally, I’m saying they are usually a subtle symbol that a person never had what it took to make it really big in the first place. Is this 100% true, all of the time? No. But as a rule of thumb, I’ll bet it’s close enough.
Entertainment Weekly had an interview with the 3 actresses a couple of issues ago. Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz sounded (and seemed to behave) like a couple of junior high school fangirls. It was slightly painful to read it.
There was one shot where the camera was to her right and she adjusted the left side of her shirt. If you had a spotlight shining on it I have to assume you would have seen something.
You may want to check your local over night NBC listings. Leno repeats occur a week. For instance Lisa Kudrow appeared on the June 19th show. That repeat will air June 27th at 2:35am local time. (HST)
ahem I meant to say that they will repeat a week later. So this week’s Monday episode will repeat at about 2:30am next Tuesday morning. So she’ll repeat on the 1st of july early in the morning. Set your recorder.
After seeing Cameron Diaz in a number of interviews, I would agree that she comes across as a ditz. I enjoyed her performances in Vanilla Sky and Any Given Sunday, but I think she fares better in less dramatic roles.
Slight hijack: One actress I saw in an interview recently that seemed like a ditz was Mariska Hargitay from Law and Order: SVU. This surprised me. But, on the other hand, I had never seen her do anything outside of Law and Order.
And that’s the bottom line I read the Playboy interview with Mariska and thought she sounded OK…her on camera interview might have been an act. Pretty shiney, too!
And Exapno Mapcase Demi Moore ain’t sporting original equipment IMHO. Watch Blame it on Rio and then watch Striptease. Something Bruce_Daddy and Peach might also enjoy!
