Since reading about the tragic airline crash, I realized I had never even heard of these islands and went to Wikipedia to read up a bit.
To say the least, these islands seem to be isolated and off the usual tourist destination maps - although a quick search of hotels seems to show a small tourism industry there.
Just wondering if any Dopers have ever been to Comoros or Mayotte, and your impressions?
Not an island that you mentioned, but Fernando de Noronha, the stopping point between “whatever they found at sea” and Recife, Pernambuco, is a very difficult place to visit even for Brazilians. Basically, a clearance and a visa are needed in order to go see the island. I’ve known people who have gone them, a few on research, and another couple managed to go there on vacation (but mentioned it was a very difficult and pricy endeavor). My ex-classmate who went, she had to get a full physical exam before they let her go.
