A while ago, a wealthy guy has hidden 5 treasure chests in various locations around the United States, which led to a bit of a stir on the Guardian, CNN, New York Post, and other sites.
The cynic in me thinks he is doing this partly because he could potentially raise as much or more revenue from sales of his book as the amount of money he is giving away in these treasure chests. Still, though, it’s all good fun.
I’ve heard of things like this, but usually after they’re already over; I think there was one in Massachusetts a few months ago. There are news reports that somebody found the prize, but I never see any details on how. Is there some coded message that gives latitude and longitude, a series of directions, a picture of some place we’re supposed to recognize, or something else.
For this particular treasure hunt (Collins-Black,) the 5 chests each come with their own puzzle to be solved - a poem that gives hints, a crossword puzzle type anagram thing, a word-cipher paragraph, etc. The author has also stated that one is on or near the Appalachian Trail and that all boxes lie within 3 miles of a public road.
Back when I was in highschool, our local newspaper did a treasure hunt for some gold bars. They published an illustration every day that had clues to the location, and it was pretty popular.
The person who found it? They noticed a weird package hidden in a tree while walking their dog, and took it home. Hadn’t even looked at any of the clues.
Collin-Black has a 240-page book titled “There’s Treasure Inside”, which contains clues on how to find the five treasure chests. The book was sold out for a while, but has been newly reprinted. I just received a copy as a gift from my daughter, but haven’t had time to read it yet. I am wondering if anyone here has started hunting or knows of any discussion groups sharing information.
