Thanks. I very much enjoyed the game. You had a bit of bad luck in the opening, and recovery was problematic. It happens to the best of us.

I think your resignation is appropriate. Here, the very best Black can do is 27…b6. He must stop the white queen from checking on c5, because 28.Qc5+ leads to mate in just a couple of moves. After 27…b6, though, White will simply play 28.Kg1, which eliminates the nasty backrank mate that Black held out hope for.

But actually, 26.Qd3! was the final nail. The real beauty of it was that a move by Black to protect his d-pawn, like 26…Rhd8, would have been met with 27.Qh3!, which eventually either wins Black’s rook or checkmates Black.

I thought you put up a good fight.

Your 18…Qd4! was a really sharp move. Even though you were down a pawn, you would have had some chances with a passed pawn if I had traded queens. You forced me momentarily into a defensive mode. And remember, that good sharp move of yours is what sent me rushing for a board!

If you like, we can play another. You be White this time. This is an enjoyable venue. We can take our time. There’s no hurry. It’s just pals playin’ a game.
