Haven’t thought about this in decades, but yesterday the song came on the radio and I remembered the cheesy-assed video the guys in my dorm made for this contest and just how positive they were in regards to their chances of winning. (I was not so sanguine…)
I participated, waved a few flags and shit, but never thought we had a chance… and when the winner was announced (a professionally produced video from an outfit from Miami), it made me realize just how cynical an exercise in hype this contest was. (I was 19 and emo-ing really bad, so cut me some slack. )
Anyway… anybody else involved in making a video for this one (or any of their other “make a video contests”)?
I remember that contest really well. I was around that age too, but I didn’t really think they misrepresented the chances of winning. For the vast majority of entries the ‘prize’ was merely having it shown on MTV. And they showed tons of them, and most were stuff that had no business being broadcast. People holding camcorders shooting girls in terrible Madonna outfits lip-syncing to the song being playing open-mike.
I think I saw the top 25 finalists, and they made it apparent that these people definitely took it very seriously. They had to be amateurs but they were all college/film school grads using the contest to break into show business.
Something amusing I remember is that MTV ran and promoted this contest for months, so long before it was over Madonna did shoot an actual video for the song to promote the single everywhere except the US. One night I caught it being played on MTV and, thinking it was a contest entry, my jaw dropped not only at the production values but at them having the most amazing looking Madonna impersonator ever!! :smack:
I submitted a video for this contest a little over 30 years ago myself I never got to see it on MTV but I was trying to find it see maybe if they have it in their archives I would be awesome to see it unfortunately I had to work that night so I missed it but anybody knows where I could find it let me know
