Anybody in the Colorado Mountains here?

Well I have a real jones for some camping and fishing and was thinking about taking some time off and heading up to the mountains to sleep on the gorund, throw some lines into the water, and get drunk looking up at the stars. Is anybody here from somewhere around Nederland, Ward, Evergreen, Estes Park, , Poudre Canyon, Idaho Spgs., Winter Park, or any of the mountain areas within 2 hours of Denver? If anybody is, what’s the snow like, and are the roads above 10,000 feet passible yet? I havent’ had a chance to head up and check it out myslef yet, so I’d appreciate the info. If not I can always head to Moab, but that is a bit of a commitment, and lacks fishing.

Well, I’m not in Colorado any more, but I was there for 11 years. It’s pretty early to expect the mountains to be nice enough for camping out. In general, we waited until mid-June for any serious camping. Moab, on the other hand, is glorious this time of year. I spent many Easters in Moab because it was warm and easy to camp out there whereas the Colorado high country was too snowy and cold.

We still have a good snow cover in the High Country. As a matter of fact we are still getting snow this weekend. In addition, the avalanche danger is relatively high in those danger areas.

However, the roads where you are considering going are clear. Heck, for the most part, you are considering suburbs not back country so no problems at all there. It is pretty much a piece of cake getting in and around there - although you might get your Navigator (or whatever) muddy from the snow melt.

Not pit worthy, but when I read your post for the first time I was mad, which is why I took the time to wait a couple days to make this response, just for the cool down period. I personally get quite insulted when someone who does not know me questions my woodmanship. I know quite well that the back country-Indian peaks and the like- are not viable for an ill prepared and spontaneous camping trip at this time of year. I was simply asking the condition of the lower elevation mountain car camping areas right now. Your post came off as condesending, if I misinterpreted I apologise, but calling it the suburbs, and the Navigator reference which seems to imply that I don’t know the camping world, just seemed inappropriate.
