Anybody notice the new site Abuzz that looks like it wants to compete with us?

The New York Times has set up a new site that looks almost like a carbon copy of this one…e.g you write in your questions and other members send in their answers. I signed up, but it looks pretty dull. Mostly, they have no Cecil, and also they don’t have the committed regulars that we have here. It’s called Abuzz.com. Let’s see how they do. I noted a couple of -gry type questions right of the bat. Also, it’s hard to use.

Anyone ask the parkway/driveway question there yet?

I did :stuck_out_tongue:

Then there’s this place…

Pathedic ripoff if you ask me.

No answers yet.

There is, now!

Don’t worry they don’t stand a chance. I won’t register over there.

Maybe we should go visit their site, and answer questions with links to the Straight Dope. Then we might get some interesting new arrivals over here (of course, the danger is that these new arrivals might be from New York City and join the ranks of the SDMB New York Clique.)

There! I answered the GRY question with a SD column. Soon, we will have hordes of abuzz users flocking to our site.

Playing around a little bit over there is probably OK, but I think the last thing you (or the owners of this site) want is for SD folks visiting that site to get the reputation as being trolls over there - and, frankly, that sounds exactly like what you’re currently doing/proposing.

After all, think of how you’d feel if a bunch of folks from over there came over here specifically to stir up trouble, or specifically to advertise the presence of their site…

Actually, Will Golf, I don’t think I did anything wrong. Someone asked “what is a third word ending with -gry”, and I said “You can find the answer at this link.” and then posted a link to Cecil’s column.

I wouldn’t qualify that as trolling.

Sorry, Arnold - I was using the term “you” in the plural sense rather than in “the person who just posted the previous message” sense.

I saw a couple of messages (Louie suggesting that he went over there to ask the driveway/parkway question, your suggesting that “Maybe we should go visit their site, and answer questions with links to the Straight Dope” - and then your doing just that) and got concerned that this whole thread was headed in the “guess what I did over there?” direction. Not good, IMHO.

Again, before anyone heads over there to post a message I’d suggest that he/she consider how he/she’d react if someone from over there came over here to post a similar message.

If you’d feel fine about it, great. (I suspect that a lot of folks would like to pursue their Great Debates in several locations.) Otherwise, otherwise.

I sense a replay of the Left Behind debacle. Arnold’s actions seem appropriate and responsible, but I’d hate to see the fallout if we start spamming them with non-elite lemur questions just to irritate them.

I can’t post over there. They’re strangers. Besides the questions sucked. There were no what’s you favorite questions.

I’m only your wildest fear, from the corners of your darkest thoughts.

Thought I would gander at their site.

It’s very pink. Pepto Bismol (sp) comes to mind < giggle >.

Maybe I should go surfin’ in the Pacific while Chicago and New York have their fun. Lemme know who wins.

Hi. I thought it was important to pop into this thread and recite Straight Dope policy on this.

The Straight Dope does not police the off-board postings of its members, and all are free to do as they choose when not using the Straight Dope name. That said, when one does invoke the name of Cecil or his site, we have some pretty strong preferences.

We’re all for visiting sites like this one, in fact it makes us look better by comparison. I mean, it looks horrible, and I can’t find anything over there.

We are, of course, also supportive of linking to Cecil’s columns (or a mailbag item or a SDMB thread) in answer to a question; it’s good to spread the Gospel, and we’re confident that the authoritative answers provided by Cecil, the Straight Dope Staff and our valued members will help gain new members.

But please do not carry out a coordinated “attack” on the site with a bunch of -gry questions. We want to be good neighbors, just as we would hope others would be good neighbors to us.

And on the subject of New Yorkers, be assured that all new members from the New York metro area are thoroughly vetted before gaining membership to the Clique.

Actually, I am the one who brought up the parkway/driveway question, mainly because I was curious if it (along with any other “joke” questions–but that’s the most well-known one on here) was something that would come up naturally at another question site.

Here’s a current Time article on more “expert” sites.

But what happens when everybody listens to all the experts and then knows as much as Cecil? (I presume it is mathematically impossible to know more than the Omniscient One. And can I get add-on wetware memory somewhere? Actually, I’d like to ship back some that isn’t working too well. What was that name. . .oh, yeah. . .downloading:
