Anybody remember S&H Green Stamps

yay!

I got my first bike, when I was 6 or 7, through S & H Green Stamps!

When I first moved into my own apartment, my mom let me use the last of her precious S&H Green Stamps to get myself…an ironing board. Actually, it lasted me for at least 20 years; at least they had good stuff!

I still remember how fun it was filling all those books, too. Definitely a fond childhood memory!

Not only S&H Green Stamps, but ther was also:

Plaid tamps (as suggested above)

Twp Guys stamps (for the store Two Guys from Harrison, now long departed.)

Another (non S&H ) brand of green stamps.

We collected books and books of the S&H and the Two Guys stamps, and for the life of me I can’t recall getting anything with them…

I recall my mother redeeming some to get a canoe back in the early 80’s.

I not only helped my mom paste them in books, I gave them out when I worked as a cashier at Weis Markets! Mom used to love it when it was time to wash my cashier’s smock, because I’d always have handfuls of stamps to give to her. People would say, “I don’t collect these, dear, would you like to take them home to your mother?” That first year I brought home enough to replace every sheet and towel in the house…

We used a wet sponge on a plastic soap dish to moisten the back, so we didn’t have to lick them :stuck_out_tongue:

Lordy! I haven’t heard that store name in eons. That ranks up there with E. J. Korvettes.

My grocery store still gives S&H Greenpoints out - The Foodtown, in Red Bank, NJ. A terrific grocery store. They do a lot in the community.

I had a mother who collected them, pasted them herself, and would only redeem them for what she wanted. Looking back, I now realize that was about the only thing she “spent” on herself. Growing up poor really sucks.

Kakofonous said, “I was the family stamp-licker, too. My sister could never get the hang of putting either 15 10 pt stamps on a page or 3 50 pt stamps.”

Me, too. Although my wonderful mom supplied me with a SPONGE (what a doll!). I once filled in each of the spaces with the corresponding size stamp. A few bigs and a bunch of littles on the same page. Very uncool. I was stripped of my duties for a few weeks, but then mom gave me a pardon and I was back at it.
