I love this thread.
Me too. It reminds me, on a fairly regular basis, that I’m still alive.
I did not know that it was a sandwich shop but I own a golf putter in the shape of a hot dog that is marked “Stewart infra red”.
Growing up in Madison WI and then Middleton WI my family owned a franchise of Stewart Sandwiches. In fact I still have one of the Infra-Red ovens in my basement. One of our biggest accounts was the Tommy Bartlett Water Show in Wisconsin Dells WI, some of the bigger sellers were Hot dogs and Chuckwagons. I grew up eating Stewart Sandwiches. The good ole days!!!
You’re still alive.
As alive as the memory of delicious Stewart Sandwiches!
Hey Folks, I found your thread and had to jump in. I have read all I can read on Stewart Sandwiches out there. I unsed to enjoy them with my Dad at the Firehouse and at the local tavern in Elmont New York. I own a winery in Fishers, Indiana and thought it would be great to bring them into the winery to enjoy as we do not have a kitchen license.
Unfortunately, I guess they are no longer in business. I cannot find any ovens or businesses that are still around except Royal Deli Foods. It says they carry Stewart Sandwiches but I dont know if they are the originals.
So, if anyone knows where I can purchase the oven and the sandwiches, please let me know.
Thanks,
Kevin

Royal Deli Foods’ website says that they have a wholesale sales program for Stewart Sandwiches and has a number you can call. It looks like they’re about 200 miles from you.

That page has a price list that mentions Chuckwagons, Torpedoes, etc. You could check them out and see if they’re close to the originals or not. Someone in this thread said that they have an oven stored in their basement. Maybe they’d sell it.
Yes, they were great. My favorite was the TORPEDO !
My father owned a gas/grocery station in Union, Kentucky from about 1962-1966. Not long after we opened he started carrying the Stewart Infrared Sandwiches. They sold well enought that they gave us two ovens. I remember the Hamburger was 25 cents nd the cheesburger was 30 cents. Those were my favorites. They were really quite good, as good as most fast food burgers. The delivery man would come by weekly. I remember the first guy we had left our store after his delivery and crashed his truck less than a half mile from our store. He had an oven in the front seat with him and it really caused him to suffer a severe injury. He had permanent brain damage and never returned.

How the f#k is the name “Dangerous” still available.

Hi, Dangerous.
Seriously. I had to double check to see that it was spelled correctly and wasn’t using a 0 for an o or something. I hope the poster isn’t a one-post wonder wasting a good name.
I’m still wondering why Spud1 hasn’t been used yet.
I think it’s cool the way people are googling “Stewart Sandwiches” and finding this board.
When I google it, this thread is the first result; followed by a thread on roadfood.com, a Stewart Sandwiches FB page, then the Royal Deli Foods page mentioned earlier in this thread.
I recently had a hankering for a “Chuckwagon”. Growing up in Floral Park,NY back in the late 60’s and early 70’s it was the staple of 3am bar food. I remember the strong onion taste and smell, and the pat of butter or whatever that was, that made it moist and juicy. 1 was not enough, I would usually eat 2-3 in a row.
Yeah, this is probably the most unique thread on the Dope. And it makes me wish I had the chance to try some of these sandwiches.
2017 and the thoughts of Stewart Sandwiches still propel people to this thread and is the most read section of my food blog with a link to this thread and other locales mentioning our long-lost but still beloved vittles.
If made properly, and if the sandwich was fresh, they came out very nice,* slightly* crispy and brown. The bread was the thing- microwaved bread is problematic.
I was walking down the hall at work and could swear someone had a Stewart Sandwiches cheese pizza. Amazing that the smell was SOOOOO familiar after 30 years. I used to volunteer in the kitchen at my private school in Maryland starting in 7th grade heating up the sandwiches because we got a free one out of the deal!
Anybody want to guess how we could approximate these sandwiches today? I’m a fan of cheap, quick bar food and am just a little too young to remember these in their heyday. I sure would love to try one.
Looks like Deli Express still sells Chuckwagon sandwiches, etc. Or maybe another brand of gas station sandwich like Landshire may work better. Put them in an oven bag and a convection toaster oven for a few minutes maybe? Or do you think the recipes have just changed too much?
