The second heart attack for Dick Cheney in 5 months has gotten me thinking about the possibility of either:
Dubya leaves the presidency, by dying, resigning, whatever, elevating Dick to the office. Dick has the big one, either before or after appointing a new Veep.

Cheney has the big one, (see Redd Foxx above) Dubya appoints a new Veep (maybe Dan Quayle, for a ‘Dumb and Dumber’ kinda thing) Bush dies, resigns, whatever.
Either way, we would have a president who was never part of a ticket, was never elected or even contemplated by the teeming millions (or at least the 45% or so who vote).
What do you think of this, and who do you think that the appointee for Veep would be.
Disclaimer: I certainly hold no ill will towards Mr. Cheney and I hope that his heart problem doesn’t affect his job, or vice versa. In fact, if all four of the Pres/VP candidates, plus Nader and Buchannan ran on their own, I would probably have voted for Cheney. It is a possiblity to consider though, which you have to do, since he could be the most powerful man in the world.
I was just reflecting this morning on why it is that only liberals are successfully assassinated? (Not that I’m advocating that anyone be assassinated, so don’t have heart failure).
At first I was thinking that the left never even tries to kill the right, but now I remember Ford and Reagan were both victims of attempts. But all the ones who actually ended up dead were liberals: the Kennedys and King. Even George Wallace just ended up in a wheelchair.
I guess that’s what we get for being so down on guns. We’re lousy shots. (WHICH IS A GOOD THING. ASSASSINATION IS BAD. NO KILLING. NO HURTING.NO MAIMING.)
Alma Powell objects to the rigors of campaigning: loss of privacy, mind-numbing hours spent with hacks and flacks, demeaning supplications for money and favor. I’ve read nowhere that she would resist CP’s elevation to POTUS via some special circumstances.
Having said that, I don’t think GOPers would select Powell at all. They’re much more comfortable keeping that double rarity, a black GOPer and a American hero, at a remove from true power. His views on abortion and affirmative action don’t mesh with GOP activists, and as SoS he’s already run afoul of the right when he was forced to recant his perfectly reasonable comments on North Korea.
Given the circumstances of the OP, I’d guess the man chosen would be someone like Cheney: former congressman, tons of experience in government and business, glutton for work, competent, self-effacing, and firmly aligned with right-wing of party. Someone like Donald Rumsfeld.
