I heard this morning that Dick Cheney, Bush’s running mate, checked himself into the hospital for chest pains he suffered. I hope he gets better, really. I mean, what if he is incapacitated and is unable to see as VP, if Bush gets elected? Does that mean Bush would have to pick either Tom Delay, or…Strom Thurmond(!) as vice president??? Or will we have a happy ending, and Bush instead pick Colin Powell, then resign immediately?
And exactly what do you like about powell? If it’s that he’d be the first black president, that’s not enough. Tell me some issues and where he stands on them and how you agree with them and I’ll be impressed. ALL of the people I know who expressed approval for Powell could not state one thing he stands for. I think it’s just a politically correct thing for folks to endorse Powell! Especially Republican/conservative folks, because he sounds more like a Democrate to me.
If Cheney is unable to serve, Bush should pick someone who would carry on as President in the same manner as Bush intended too. (but that’s not going to happen because I’d bet my first born that Gore get’s in! )
Re Cheney:
They say his artery was 90% blocked by a hanging chad.
Hm. Is your first-born my age and female? (looks around quickly to ensure 'nelle isn’t looking…)
Nevertheless, I find your optimism encouraging.
The best situation I can think of is for florida’s votes to be rejected, and the election by decided by the remaining states.
If Cheney is medically unfit to serve, then Bush can replace him before inauguration day, and all he needs is the approval of the Republican Party, I think. After the election, the new VP would have to be approved by the Senate?
I don’t like Cheney, but I feel bad for him…this is the FOURTH heart attack he’s had since he was 37!
Based on what? Oh please…hand me some small morsel of hope!

Don’t bury the guy yet. I had the same thing happen to me. I got kicked out of the hospital without being admitted. If he didn’t have his history (and a gummit health plan instead of my loser HMO), he probably would have been sent home, too.
As heart attacks go, this is the one the other traders laugh at you about on the trading floor because you had such a wimpy attack.
Cheney will be back doing his thing by week’s end.
Hear! Hear! Florida gets four years to figure out how to have an election, and might be allowed to play next time.
Cheney has a heart?
[Ducks for cover]
I just think Gore will insist on recounts and court orders now until forever until he is declared the winner. If the U.S. Supreme Court rules against him, hell, he’ll go whinning to the United Nations. He’ll write to Santa Clause.
He’s not going to give up until he gets to place his hand on that Bible in January. Whine, sue, and make up rules via the courts, what ever it takes. Though I voted for Bush, I’m willing to bet Gore gets in!
And my first born is a straight 20 year old male. Sorry Kyber.
I pride myself on not particularly caring for either one of the present contenders (I still want the Electoral College to protest en masse and pick McCain). That said, I have to tell those of you complaining about Tennessee Al that Dubya would have been doing the exact same thing had the numbers been reversed. Neither one is suitable presidential material, and neither one is desirable as a chief executive. And neither one is going to have an easy four years (and it’s only going to be four years, no matter who gets it). Of course, this is good news to those of us who found the presidential salad bar looking a bit stale (in the side dishes as well as the big bowls) this time around. Neither one is going to have enough political capital to be able to mess things up in the limited time they’re going to be in office.
There are laws, which count for little in such cases.
And there is politics, which counts for everything.
The processing of Agnew and Ford, etc. was all done with the consent of the party leaders. They could have blocked any outcome. No law is uncontestable, and no contest is apolitical.
