So who on the boards has been in Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day, whether as a visitor or resident? I heard that it was traditionally a very quiet day until recently, where’s it become much more a festival–is that true? I’m especially interested in replies to people who’ve been in Northern Ireland.
I went a week later one year:)
Hello from Ireland. I stay indoors all day. The streets are full of Irish drunks, and Americans in awful costumes.
well from the late 60s to the early 80s you couldn’t sell alcohol on st pats day so the pubs just closed down for the day …
one of the Irish gov ministers was in Boston for it and seen the partying and figured well “why dont we do this there like we used to and get the tourist money”
There’s been a slight movement occasionally of people trying to get the ban reinstated but theres just too much money in it these days and its turned into an irish mardi gras …
Nevermind them Wee Green Folk!
…it’s those dancin’ pink elephants you have to look out for!
