The story is okayish (though one can grow tired of attempts to squeeze prequels into the cracks in franchise backstories) but the effects budget is pretty low. For instance, they made only one “alien moon” model and rotated it slightly to be a different moon.
I saw a few (4-5?) of them over at a friend’s house who is pretty into all things stargate.
I guess the understanding is that they are completely rebooting the franchise, and this is kinda the kicking off point for it. Supposedly there will be a trilogy of movies to follow.
Does seem as though it completely negates everything in stargate cannon, not just the series, but the original movie too.
Not necessarily. At the end of the last episode, Doctor Daddy convinces the Goa’uld that the Nazis can’t be trusted and ends up erasing their memories and allowing Doctor Daddy and Catherine Langford to return to Earth. Ethnic Sidekick is mind-compelled to go be the new leader of the slaves on the planet, Handsome Love Interest is killed, and Ra shows up and kills everyone else. Reset button successfully pressed, allowing the original Stargate continuity to remain intact* if* the new trilogy didn’t want to change everything.
Ah, I didn’t see to the end, and did specifically say to my friend, “Unless they do some sort of mindwipe plot device, this completely rewrites the history.” As soon as they were talking about the “pyramid” symbol towards the beginning.
Bit disappointed they went with that, actually.
I’ll probably get around to seeing the rest of them this weekend sometime.
I wouldn’t mind seeing some sort of rebooting or revisiting of the franchise. It had some derpy moments to be sure(esp. episodes written by Christoper Judge), but was mostly a solid scifi show. I wonder if this min-series will actually generate enough interest to greenlight anything that direction.
