I’m currently going through the process to become a Big Sister with Big Brothers / Big Sisters. I’ve got my first interview with my case manager next Tuesday, and I’m really excited for it.
Just wondering if any of you guys have or were a Little Brother or Sister? Are you happy with the experience? Any advice? Since I’m still so early in the process, I don’t know what to expect, or know anyone who has been one.
I was a Big Sister for a while, and my sister-in-law is the Executive Director for Big Brothers/Big Sisters in her area.
I was happy with the experience, but it was WAY more work that I expected. At the time I had a fairly flexible job, and could afford the minimum 4 hours/week with the kid. About 4 months in, however, my job changed, and I was suddenly working 40+ hours a week. Suddenly, losing almost a full day every week (4 hours with the kid, plus time to figure out what to do with her) was unmanageable, and I had to quit.
However, it was pretty cool. I had a teenager, which is not an age that most people pick. I think I did some good, although it’s hard to tell - she was 16, and not big on feedback. All in all, it was fun, and I’d do it again if I had more time.
