My wife and I are celebrating our first wedding anniversary in February and would like to get away for 3 or 4 days to celebrate.
There are some really good deals to Brunei at the moment and I’d quite like to visit as it seems like an interesting place (ie, exotic), but my wife isn’t so sure about the idea (knowing nothing about the country other than the Sultan is the world’s richest person) and would rather go to the Whitsundays instead.
The thing is, I was up that way last month for work, so there’s an element of “But I was just there!” Yes, it’s lovely and very pretty, but I’d like to go somewhere different for our anniversary and save the Whitsundays for a “Long weekend” later on in the year.
Of course, if it turns out that there’s nothing at all to do in Brunei except look at jungle, then I can understand giving it a miss this time round.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone on the boards had been to Brunei, and if so, what did they think of the place?
I haven’t personally been to Brunei, but my friend has, and he amused himself by playing with the cicadas. Wikitravel has a brief summary of the place.
I visited my brother there several years ago. There wasn’t much to see. It’s a fairly strictly Muslim country too, so no alcohol, if that’s important. That said, I stayed a few nights at the Empire Town & Country Club, and never have I wallowed in such luxury. You want to stay in a room above the level of the palm trees and facing out to sea. There was a very nice butterfly park, accessible by water taxi.
Thanks guys- pretty much matches what I’d found via my own research (IMHO Wikitravel is less than useless, though).
Neither my wife nor I are huge drinkers so that wouldn’t be an issue (you can bring a dozen beers and two bottles of whatever you like in with you anyway. I wouldn’t drink that much in a month, never mind 3 or 4 days!)
I don’t suppose anyone knows what the shopping is like there?
