Well, what is it like then?
I am going there ( Lourdas ) for a week in late June , the weather looks like it is going to be pretty hot as it was 32 degrees this morning at 11am over there. Is it true that on this island or just Greek folks in general that they only respect people who talk really loud? I am not really sure what to ask so if you have any stories on the place I would like to read them.
I know that the film “Capital Corelli’s Mandolin” was filmed there, and the island looked quite beautiful. You may wish to rent it and take a look.
I have not been to that specific Island but I was in Greece about a month ago. They yell when they get upset. Its not so much talking loudly as it is screaming to get attention. Its takes you aback at first but you quickly get used to it. However I don’t think they will respect you any more or less if you react similarly. Its not something you should concern yourself with.
As far as the weather, it will be quite warm. It can also be fairly humid.
All and all I have found the Greeks to be very friendly and the lifestyle is very relaxed. Its a perfect vacation destination. Have fun!!
Better yet, read the book Corelli’s Mandolin. It’s a wonderful book.
Um, I meant Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, of course. D’oh!
I’ve been to Samos, Skiathos and Paxos. My mum and Dad have been to Kefalonia twice - to Lourdas, in fact. They had a great time. You’ll get fit walking up and down the hill to the beach, by the way.
It’s very laid back and relaxing. It’ll be hot, and the sun will be fierce in the middle of the day. I adopt the Greek habit of taking a siesta after lunch and going back to the beach about 3 or 4 pm. But whatever suits you. Eating out in Greece is cheap, and pleasant. Prices might have gone up slightly since the euro came in, but you can probably get a meal for two for about 20 euros (greek salad, chicken souvlaki, beer). Prices have probably gone up since the film of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin —
Re the shouting thing - Greeks tend to raise their voices quite loud when they’re arguing with each other, but it has no relevance to how they view anyone, Greek or visitor, in an ordinary situation. The Greek tradition is to be very warm and friendly with visitors.
Yeah our hotel is 2K up a mountain/hill from the nearest beach so I will have to top up my calories with a big slice of feta to compensate .
I have read Captain Corellis, that was a big decider in destination choice, the film however is a big pile of dirty pants.
Cheers
If the skeptic has his email or AIM handle in his profile, you should ask him. His Greek ancestry has ensured him a visit to almost every single island (if not all). If I see him online, I’ll give him a heads up about this thread.
