Anyone been to UVic (BC)

I’m thinking of going to University of Victoria in Canada for MBA studies – has anyone visited or attended there? The thing I’m most looking for is a collegial atmosphere where students help each other, and professor care about their students.

For that matter, has anyone simply know of someone who has gone to UVic?

I’ve been there. Graduated from there, in fact, as a Computer Science major. I’m afraid that I cannot comment specifically on the MBA program, but I can give you my impression.

The campus is quite beautiful, with a fountain and large set of lawns as the central area. There are quite a variety of trees both in and around campus. Being that it’s a ‘smaller’ university, it has not yet become a complete concrete jungle.

I’m not the most social animal, but it seemed to me like the students and staff were friendly enough. I personally found that at least some of the professors were more interested in their research and considered students and classes a barely necessary nuisance, especially at the first year level, but to be honest I’m not sure it would be particularly different anywhere else.

However, in general I found that the profs were what I expected – some good, some bad, some indifferent. Most of them were at the very least knowledgeable, and the ones that really took an interest in teaching and in sharing the material were a delight.

So on the professor front I’d have to say – it was acceptable.

Tutors were always posting their contact information around campus, and in my own classes and discipline I didn’t find it too difficult to find someone who was more knowledgeable to give me a few pointers.

I know I’m being deliberately vague, but seeing as I did a different degree, I’m not sure if my experiences would be valid to compare against.

However, I can say that I certainly never felt like UVic was a poor choice. It has a pretty good reputation, and its a big enough city that there are at least some things to get up to. Keep in mind, it’s not ‘the big city’ by any stretch.

I might be able to answer specific questions, s’long as its not about the MBA program particularly. I hope you do give UVic consideration, though.
