I have to admit, with all the gushing I’ve heard/read about the X-Box (not just from seriousart), I’m leaning toward holding out for it.
But is it all valid praise, or just another spoke in the Evil Bill Gates Media Brain Washing Crusade?

Rumor is the PSX2 costs about $450 to make. It won’t be $99 any time soon.
Plus, NOT $299.00, because you need a memory unit $34.00, a game $50? & sales tax, more like $400.00 The dvd remote control is extra. The stand is extra.
the only other game I want is one you can create your own firework shows. Fantavision.
Target stores only get 20 per store. I preordered from Electronic Boutique online some months back. They are going to ship, [no sales tax] for $6.50 altogether as it comes in.
came to about $389. with the psx2, FFXI [dunno anything about this game yet, after all there is going to be FF9, FFx & ffxi] & the memory unit with shipping. sigh
Doesn’t the PS2 come with a memory card? I know my friend’s imported PS2 did. The stand’s going to be about $15-$20, and it is a nice little space-saver.
Anyway, my take on the Xbox/PS2 thing is that there will be games that will come out on the PS2 that won’t come out for any other system. Figuring most prominently in this is pretty much everything from Square, though there are vague rumors that they’ll do Xbox too. OTOH, I can’t imagine, based on its architecture, that there will be a single game worth having that will come out for Xbox that will not come out for PC. And since a decent PC will almost always be more powerful than a console (remember, next November is about 2 product cycles away), I’d prefer upgrading my computer to buying an Xbox.
So, to answer Jack’s question, it’s all valid praise - the Xbox will be one heck of a system. OTOH, you’ll need to look at what games are (and aren’t) coming out for it. Also, if you’re an impatient cuss, and you sound like you are, a year is an awfully long time to wait…
I resemble that remark.
Be sure to try circuitcity.com, target.com, kmart.com & see what they say. Right now only circuitcity.com has any notice. They said each store is going to get a very few & first come first serve. Ought to be interesting.
What they said.
I’m thinking I will finally be able to buy this system in a couple years, when the price drops to $99 (heck, that’s how I got my current Playstation).
This is probably how I’m gonna get mine. I’ve told my husband that I’m willing to take a rain check this Xmas, but I reserve the right to cash it in whenever I want to. I WILL want it by the time Final Fantasy IX comes out. Right now, I’m almost finished with Chrono Cross and I’ve got Threads of Fate and Legend of Mana yet to go.
Ok. Another link, very biased info from the makers of Xbox, giving a side by side comparison of Xbox vs PS2:
http://www.dailyradar.com/xboxmag/usa/xboxvsps.html
With all that said, if I had the money to burn, I’d surely pick up a new Playstion in a heartbeat. If only to bide my time till next fall when Xbox finally comes out. But since I don’t, I’m gonna wait.
I was considering buying one until I heard how much they cost.
I still may get one, I’m just trying to figure out where to put it so that Spidey doesn’t notice, because you know what female spiders do to their mates.
Don’t tear your hair out over it. The inside word is that while PS2 is indeed an awesome machine, many of the the videogame programmers have not even come close to realizing the full potential of the power of the machine yet. Hence, the games out now for it are “one step above” that of PS1.
This makes sense. I remember when PS1 first came out. I still have NBA Jam, which really is “one step above” a Sega Genesis game.
Your better off saving your $300 bones and waiting. The price will go down, the games will get better. Plus, they are still cranking out very good PS1 titles here and there, like “Tony Hawk 2”, “Smackdown 2” and the one I just got the sad news won’t be out now until 11/15, “Ultimate Fighting Championship”.
On top of all this, if there are any bugs with the American version of the system, they will be workeed out as later models churn out.
Be patient, my son!
“Playstation 2 comes out this Thursday. If I were a man of means, I would rush out and buy it.”
If you can find it, buy it. You can get double your money on it. Buy two, youll own one for free! Can’t sell the other one? Take it back to the store. Easy.
very few people are going to be able to find one tomorrow.

I’d prefer not to buy the PS2 for a few reasons.
1.) The games. They’re usually the same, tired, old PSX games with better graphics. Do I really want to play FFIX when the older versions were better? How many Twisted Metals will the public put up with? Also, they lack a strong 3rd party support because of the difficult programming for the games.
2.) The price. $250 system, $30 memory card, $30 controller #2 (single player games suck it), $50 game. That’s $360, plus I might want a second game. $410. DVD controller? Extra. Broadband connection (if/when it arrives)? Extra.
3.) I already own a DVD player. I’m not wasting $100 when I can get a DreamCast or GameCube for $150.
4.) The “It plays old games” argument. If you have old games, you also have the old system (99% of the time). Why not just play the games on the old system (a la SNES games when N64 arrived)?
Also:
-Sony loses $100 per system.
-They’re behind on schedule (graphics chips, I believe) so only 500,000 are appearing this week. That leaves lots of pissed customers in stores.
-There are only TWO controller ports on the system. Do they think I have no friends? I’d like to be able to play with more than one person (broadband-schmwadband, you have to pay extra for the cable modem set-up, etc. This is very pricey).

I own a Dreamcast. I have yet to use controller ports three or four (maybe when I rent Power Stone 2 or NFL Blitz 2001 I’ll use them) and have never even tried to use the Internet hookup (already have one, and far, far better). Plus I paid extra for a mod chip so I could play imports. Guess what, I still think it’s the best system out there now.
Why? Because it’s extensively supported, the games are available for rental, and these are FUN games which don’t require hours of study just to learn the controls. Plus there’s an amazing variety of games, including the all-too-often neglected “arcade style” games (and you’d be surprised as to how many fans of these there still are).
That’s what I don’t see with the PS2, and that’s why I’m not buying one. Tekken is the most freaking difficult fighting game to learn EVER, and as far as I’m concerned RPGs are overrated (last one I played was Ultima Underworld 2, and that was also one of the few I enjoyed). I don’t see a whole lot of variety right now, rentals are probably a long ways off, if it ever happens, and nearly all the good games I can get on DC.
Not to disparage anyone who’s already preordered one, of course…but frankly, Bottle of Smoke, I don’t see the point of getting jealous. By all means, wait for the price to drop and then decide.
**
Instead, I ask: Are any of you rushing out to buy it? Please tell me, so that I may add your name to my list of envy and loathing. Oh, and keep me in mind if you need a partner for Madden 2001. **
If you’re in Dallas you can come down and play Madden 2001 with me. That’s really the only reason I’m gettin a P2.
Marc
I just remembered ANOTHER reason to stay with PS1: cheap, cheap games. Many video stores are clearing out their PS1 inventories (and N64 too) to make way for PS2 and Dreamcast games.
You can now get 6 month old pre-played games for as low as under $10 at Blockbuster right now.
Final Fantasy IX is for Playstation, not Playstation2, so there’s really no reason to go buy a PS2 just yet. Wait until the price drops and some are available.
How could Sony be losing $100 per system? So you’re saying Sony is going to take a loss of $50,000,000 and they were originally planning a $100,000,000 loss but couldn’t due to a component shortage? I don’t think so. They’re probably making $100 per system, and someone screwed up the information. It sounds like what car dealers tell you when you want a lower price… “But that’s my cost”, yeah ok…
c_goat, they make up the money on selling games.
FFIX is for PSX1 or PSX2

I guess that could work.
What I meant is that FFIX does not require a Playstation2 to play it. I saw some posts where people thought otherwise. Of course you can play it on the PS2 since the PS2 is backwards compatible with nearly all Playstation games.

Pretty much anything that comes in a regular CD jewel-case.
If it came in those big rectangular boxes that you could fit every game I own in with their instruction manuals and mini-walkthroughs, and still have room, it probably won’t work with PS2.
Well, its a not a PS2 obviously but Sony also released a PSOne unit a month back or so. Its a regular Playstation thats about the size of a DVD case but thicker and rounder. Nothing particularly special about it until the LCD screen for it comes out in January. Then it becomes a portable PSX of sorts, 100 bucks for the system and I don’t expect the LCD to cost more than the system, else no one would buy it.
So pretty much you’re spending your money on an outdated system. Then again, PS2 support is okay now but if programmers can’t figure out how to make the games and instead migrate to the supposedly easier to program Dreamcast and X-Box, then where is Sony going to be?
i just recently bought, count’em, 2 playstation 2’s today. i just had too. i will be posting them on ebay very soon if anyone would like to purchase them. i will be honest though, these are brand spanking new, untouched, unopened, and unbreathed on playstations that could go as high as $1,500 a piece, off season. during the christmas weeks, these puppies could go as high as $3-5,000. good luck!
