We both got colds after we visited our daughter and grandchild, no doubt from the old preschool germs. Not Covid - no headache, no loss of the sense of taste. I had a very slight temperature for a few hours.
Relieving to know we aren’t alone.
Yeah. I had a cold in January, just before I got confirmation from the Moderna trial that I had, in fact, received the active vaccine and not a placebo last fall. It wasn’t terrible, but it was bad enough that I went to urgent care to get a COVID and strep test just to be sure. (Both tests were negative; I subsequently got another COVID test through the study, also negative.)
Then about a month ago I had the mildest case of the sniffles imaginable. I didn’t even bother getting a COVID test, it was such a nothingburger. I kind of thought it might even be just allergies, but it disappeared completely after a week, so who knows. I feel like I normally get something like that once a year or so, but it’s hard to say because it doesn’t merit much attention.
I used to catch a lot of colds throughout my childhood, teens, and twenties. In my thirties, I haven’t been sick as much, even though I still have a pretty high exposure level to lots of people through my job. I don’t know if my immune system is finally hitting its stride or what, but it’s nice.
A lot of people at my work are coming down with something lately, but their COVID tests have all been negative so far.
No, nothing at all for either me or my wife. She usually gets a cold at least once a year, but I can’t remember the last time I got one. Maybe 10 years ago?
Thanks. NYT always on point!
Last time I was sick was in Vegas in oct 2019. Forced to sit beside some woman who coughed and hacked on the plane the whole way there. We stayed at a time share for 2 weeks and I was in bed for two days. Sucked but at least vacation wasn’t totally ruined.
Only wife didn’t get it.
My wife got a bad cold, it turned into pneumonia. Not pretty.
I got one and got tested to be sure. It came up negative. The cold came with quite a sinus infection, which often turn to bronchitis for me so I ended up with a z-pak of antibiotics because the doc didn’t want to chance it.
10 days later, no more cold, no more sinus infection.
In the beforetime I almost never caught colds - just the occasional mild sore throat which went away after a day without progressing. I’d only get a full-fledged cold with stuffy nose once every 2-3 years; those have always been long-lasting and merciless.
I haven’t been sick since Covid started. After reading this thread I fear I’m doomed to get a super duper bad cold at some point. Oh well, If I get it because we’re getting back to normal in a post-Covid world, that’s a price I’ll happily pay.
Nope, nothing. Another benefit of working from home IMHO.
Do they coincide with times when there are a lot of fires out west?
All the way across the USA, we’re all breathing extra particulates from that smoke; even in places where it’s so far from the source that it’s not readily recognizable as smoke.
– I haven’t had a cold since covid; but I don’t get one every year, anyway; probably more like every couple of years.
That’s actually a decent possibility. Maybe I don’t really get a cough for 2-3 weeks almost every time I do actually catch a cold. Maybe I get mild ones too and don’t notice because they’re too similar to my seasonal allergies.
I was so happy to get a cold.
Well, relieved to find out my symptoms weren’t Covid. The sore throat, headache, sinuses (especially the loss of smell and taste!) were all scary.
Didn’t get ill the whole time I was pregnant, despite my partner catching a bad cold or possibly flu at the work Xmas party, didn’t get ill once in the year after the baby was born while we were isolating at home; but since she went to nursery a few months ago we’ve endured a constant succession of colds. The first one gave me sinusitis, causing a terrible headache - much worse than normal - the other 2 or 3 have been pretty standard. I’m told this is likely to continue for the first year or so.
My teenage daughter briefly had mild chills around the same time my wife and I had COVID in June '20. She tested positive for antibodies sometime around September. And she was vaccinated in March '21.
While traveling out of state in July '21, a few days before her return flight, she had cold symptoms. At a clinic she tested positive for COVID. But then a rapid test at Walgreens, a home test from Walgreens, and finally a PCR test were all negative. So ya, I’d say she caught a cold (not particularly severe) since COVID.
I tend to have about 3 sinus infections per calendar year. I have had ONE since March 2020, and that was after cataract surgery so it doesn’t count. Masks, not being in the g.p., and increased hand washing do wonders.
Knocking wood but I haven’t been sick or felt ill since masking in Feb 2020. First time ever that I went a year without a sniffle. And I’m in my 60’s.
