Anyone else getting massively spammed?

For the last 7-10 days the spam filter on my Yahoo email has been overwhelmed. I’ve gone from getting 1-2 junk emails per day getting through the filter to >40 every day. Not even good spam, either: boner pills, $500 to participate in a survey, coupons from beSt bUY, that sort of thing.

I have a friend with a Yahoo account who’s complaining about the same thing in the same time frame. FWIW, it’s only my Yahoo account - my Gmail doesn’t seem any worse than normal.

Anyone here see the same thing? I’m blaming Russia.

My Yahoo email spam fluctuates madly. One day I’ll have 23 spam emails (in my spam folder), then I’ll have 0-3 a day for a week. No idea why.

Did you do anything unusual online recently? I signed up to a couple of job search web sites and have been getting a ton of spam from fake job search websites. Stupidly AOL doesn’t recognize 90% of them as spam.

I use AOL, so not much of a problem.

At a quick glance, it looks like my gmail account gets ~100 spam emails a day, but Google’s intercept rate is somewhere north of 99.9%.

Every now and then a spat of them will make it through the filter - presumably somebody somewhere figured out a temporary bypass. It’ll last a day or two and then quiet down. I haven’t noticed anything like that lately.

I have suddenly started getting spam TEXTS this week out of nowhere, but the Verizon filter is also good at catching them and I found the button to turn off notifications when it throws one in the spam box. Out of sight, out of mind.

It’s sometimes months between spam on gmail. Even my ATT mail gets one or two on some days. I’ve only had one that was worth answering(in order to fuck with the spammer). Even that hasn’t resulted in an increase.
Same with calls. I average a few a month even though I answer every one.
< wails >What am i doing wrong?! < wails />

When you say months between spam, you mean even spam that you never see? Your spam folder is completely empty?

Totally empty. I check both emails every day and while I’m at it, I check the spam folder.
Unless there’s spam that’s being blocked before it even reaches the spam folder but there’s no way I know to check that.

Even if that’s the case, it doesn’t explain a similar dearth of calls.

I had been for several weeks on my primary email address (not the one I use for here) but they finally stopped.

Wow. I’m envious.

I don’t even do a bunch of stuff that would justify getting tons of spam. It’s just a very old account with a very common name.

At one point, I had AT&T DSL service, and Yahoo! hosted the email for AT&T. At some point this relationship ended and the accounts were split so now I have an Yahoo! Mail account and an AT&T mail account, as does my mother. And I have noticed over the past month or so, lots of spam hitting the AT&T mailbox. Some goes directly to the junk folder while lots appears in the inbox and I’ve been moving them to the junk folder. At first I deleted them from there but since February 4, I’ve been letting them accumulate to see how many there are on average. Right now, the total is 293 messages, or close to ten per day.

So, yes, something seems to have happened to the legacy AT&T (and presumably sbcglobal.net, snet.net, pacbell.net) accounts.

Weird. I have ATT DSL and Yahoo still hosts the email even though it’s an ATT address.

By “relationship ended”, I meant that they gave me a Yahoo! mail account separate from the att.net mailbox.

And Googling, I find this thread on AT&T Community Forums from someone complaining of the same thing.

Not massively spammed, but recently I started getting a lot of spam that is back-dated to August and September of 2021. It shows up as “unread” and I have to search for it to delete it. Not sure if this is intentional on the part of the spammers, but I’m now getting about ten a day. And it’s all low-class spam.

There’s high-class spam?

Good point.

If I get one more email about discount top hats and monocles…

My sort-of throwaway outlook mail account started getting a bunch of spam about 6 weeks ago. A whole lot of “someone tried to log in to your facebook account”(I don’t have one), McAfee warnings, package not-delivered notices, “thanks for signing up” emails, etc. A whole lot of it is coming from gobbledygook dot com-type addresses. I figure that my fairly common name email address got added to a list and all the phishers are giving it their best shot.

Almost none in my Yahoo mail account. Just a few phishing attempts. Most of the stuff in my spam folder is kinda legit stuff I don’t want to see anymore.

Dunno that being old is a factor. I’ve had my Yahoo email account since 2004 and checking it now, I’ve gotten 10 pieces of spam total since last May.
