I really don’t get the whole anti-Una sentiment. Granted, for her to respond initially by pointing out that she’s sitting pretty job- and careerwise wasn’t entirely within the hypothetical framework set out in the OP, but so what? It’s an IMHO thread after all, and in no way was she threadshitting that I could see.

I like Una and all, but I think she herself quoted the relevant bit back on page 2.

Threadshitting – basically, shitting on a discussion, by belittling the topic or the people discussing it. It typically takes the form of a dismissive comment, like “Who cares?” or “This is stupid!” or similar.

If the OP had been a question along the lines of “if you were desperate to have children…?”, and someone waded in with, “I have more kids than I know what to do with. My uterus is so practiced at producing them that I wouldn’t even worry about …” I think a lot of people would find that to be a pretty shitty response.

As I said, I like Una, but pretty sure if someone as new and low of post count as myself had made that reply I would have gotten slapped around a bit.

So, a decade or so ago when all you long time Dopers joined did you start hating each other immediately, or did it take a little while?

When SDMB moved from AOL, the board had fewer topic subdivisions. It was pretty easy to “bump into” the same people over and over. So, if you didn’t like something about a poster, it was easy to remember.

Ive been less active on the boards lately due to my increasingly busy Real Life. Reading this simply confirms to me that I’d rather clean the carbs on the Goldwing and take her out for a ride than jump into the mire that the SDMB has become.

Sad, really. For over a decade the SDMB was my home page and where I went to for info. I still read but not like in the past.

doesn’t deserve my sympathy. It reminds me of when I used to tend bar and would get occasional assholes demanding special treatment and saying “Do you know who I am? DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!”

Best comeback I ever heard was “No, but I’m sure your name is somewhere on your ID badge.” The guy went off spluttering and wanted to know about supervisors etc.

I laughed, thought the guy might get in trouble for his comeback and then realized, how is the DYKWIA not going to sound like even MORE of a douche if he complains. He’s going to be typing out his frothy anger and realize, at some point, “Uh-oh, my complaint makes me sound like a complete jackass.”.

Then again, I once had someone complain about me because I was unable to affect the speed of light. True story.
