This is why I really enjoy first- through third-quarter action of the PPT tournaments. You get to see the deep-stack strategy, which is so much more interesting.
Tournaments like that are usually structured that no one ever has more than, say, 50 bets, so I wouldn’t call it “deep stacked” - it’s still a fairly simple game. But certainly it’s more interesting than the 6 bet type short stack play late in a tournament.
Tournaments, as commonly practiced, are really a horrible way to play poker. All of the money is determined at the very end because of the top heavy structure, and at that stage, the stage that determines where all the money goes, is the most crapshooty, unskilled part of the tournament. Both things combine synergystically to produce the most lottery-like poker competition possible.
Not that there isn’t skill and strategy, but tournaments are commonly designed to minimize it.
