Urban Dead. The expansive Wiki. An AV Club review.
For those who don’t know, Urban Dead is a free, low-tech, web based MMORPG zombie apocalypse scenario. You can be a zombie or one of a handful of human classes (doctor, firefighter, soldier, etc.), but your identity isn’t set in stone: die as a human, wake up as a zombie – get injected with revivification juice by a scientist, turn back into a human.
Anyway, it’s pretty fun. I haven’t done any meta-gaming just yet (i.e. organizing with other players off-site), but I imagine that’s particularly enjoyable. It’s also worth noting that it’s inherently non-time consuming, since the mechanics of the game basically limit you to performing 50 actions per day (real-time), per character.
So, any other Doper citizens of Malton?
I played for a while, but have generally lost interest in the main game. I was one of the first members of the DHPD with some leadership, a brief member of The Elite, helped lead a small horde of zahmbahs, and a player in Red Rum. I also made serious contributions to the wiki and got promoted to SysOp/Bureaucrat (and managed to delete the deletions page!).
In Monroeville, I have two humans, and 1 zed, all Ferals.
I might be interested in playing with a doper group. Could bring a character out of retirement.
I just tried my hand at it, and it looks interesting… my only real complaint is that because my character is a Doctor and didn’t start with Free Running, it’s impossible to get into most of the buildings without damaging the barricades, which I’m obviously not going to do.
Yeah, at first you’ve got to hang out in neighborhoods where the barricades aren’t all built up to Extremely Heavily Barricaded. The maps on the Wiki can help you find such places, and the guides there can give you ideas as to how to build up XP as a newbie with the various classes.
I’ve got a few low-level characters running around. VarlosZ (Firefighter), VarlosB (Lab Assistant), and VarlosC (Zombie). Once I get a few more experience levels for each I’ll probably look for some groups to join, but for now they’re all rogues.
I used to play a long while ago - I was in the Mall Tour - but I got more into Kingdom of Loathing after that. I ought to go back and play again, but I’m afraid there’d be so much more content now that I’d never get a handle on it - even when I played they were always adding new skills.
Really? I’ve only had to get a couple of revives, but both times I found a nearby revive point online, submitted a request, and was injected within 24 hours. Is this atypical?
I play, but my interest kind of wanes off and on. I’ll check consistently for a month, then forget about it for a month or so…come back and I’ll be dead. :smack: It was fun when I was building up levels and unlocking new abilities, but once I hit the apex of the human abilities and couldn’t learn anything else I lost interest.
Personally, I find playing as a zed a bit more fun. My zombie group, before it broke up due to artistic differences, concentrated on staging forced concerts in safehouses before eating bra!nz.

Translating songs into zombie language is not easy
Oooh, this looks outstanding. A new police officer in Malton has been created. I give myself less than a day to die. Character name Captain Cracker if anyone is interested.
I’ve got a character in Malton, name of Kitsukage.
If anyones having trouble with excessive zombies, I’d have to recommend Kinch Heights, just enoughs zombies to have fun, not to many over-barricaded buildings to be locked out of…
Tis a bit of a shameless plug, but it’s a nice place!
I played for a while as a solo zed, but couldn’t get very far. I joined a group for a while, which really rapidly leveled me up.
Every once in a while I’d get revived by someone, and I’d play as a human for a while. But that got boring, so eventually I’d just charge out onto the streets and fire into the biggest group of zombies I found until I got dead again.
I stopped playing a while ago. It was fun for a while, but never that compelling.
