Watching Terra Nova made me think of this for the first time in who knows how many years. I don’t remember where I saw it originally (I think it was something HBO played between movies or it may have been on Nickelodeon) but here it is on youtube.
Yes, I love it. It really is Claymation (Will Vinton’s copyrighted term), and was made by Will Vinton productions. It was featured in his Festival of Claymation that played in indie theaters, and also appeared on the video. It was also released as a stand-alone VHS tape. They actually still use it as an educational feature at the Connecticut Dinosaur State Park in Rocky Hill, despite the fact that the passage of time has made the film a – wel – dinosaur (it shows the dinosaurs in their “old time” poses, and doesn’t even mention the K-T meteor).
Great fun, though. The scene with a T. Rex and Styracosaurus eating (with the T rex contemplating eating the Styracosaur, shown on the cover of the VHS single) inspired Vinton Studio’s images of “Roger” and “Rex”, two dinosaur movie critics (obviously based on Roger Ebert and Rex Reed), who provide the running commentary for the Festival of Claymation.
