Before I toss my computer out the window or spend a day restoring it to it’s factory settings and rebuilding it, I thought I’s throw this out there:
I have this new HP Pavillion desktop with Vista Home Premium that has otherwise worked perfectly (for Vista). It’s set up with the admin account for me, a standard account for my GF and a guest account.
So anyhow, the admin account works fine, however whenever I try to log into any of the other accounts or create a new account, I can’t log in. That is to say, I can log in, but then it goes to a completely black desktop. I can, however, CTL ALT DEL to Program Manager and move the mouse around.
I tried the following:
-Running in Safe mode
-Restoring to an earlier Restore Point. It craps out and gives me some kind of “Access Denied” error
It’s almost as if some of the services get hung up because they don’t have the correct permissions, but I don’t know how to check that.
Sorry, haven’t had that particular problem, just wanna mention that reinstalling Windows with the backup CD when it got weird on me only took 4 hours, so that’s only half a day. And it allowed me the option of updating it on top of what was already there, instead of from-the-ground-up reinstalling, so I didn’t lose all my “stuff”.
FWIW. Just that it may not be as hellish an experience as the classic “reformatting the hard drive”. Just tedious.
When you ctrl-alt-del to the task manager, can you see explorer running? If not, what happens if you run it manually? (in task manager, file -> new task [run] -> type ‘explorer’)
