Anyone ever shave themselves with a straight razor?

And how many stiches did it require? :stuck_out_tongue:

Seriously, I’ve never seen anyone do it for themselves, but I’ve had it done at a barbershop and piss on the Fusion razor, that’s the closest shave you can get. However, something tells me that it’s not something that you want to just give your best shot and hope all turns out well. I’m interested in hearing any experiances anyone has had with doing it themselves. Is it difficult? Dangerous? Too time consuming?

Mr. Kitty shaved with a straight razor on a fairly regular basis when he was doing historical reenactments. It seems that once you get the hang of it, it’s no more time consuming than a regular shave. You have to keep the blade absolutely sharp, though- you just can’t get away with a nicked or dull edge.

As far as I know, he only has one story of nearly taking his head off, when his young daughter charged into the bathroom and knocked the door into his elbow.

Yes, and it doesn’t normally lead to any more nicks than usual. But if you screw up, you can really hurt yourself.

Yeah, I’ll echo the others here.

Once you’re good at it, it’s the only way to fly. But learning can be a bit of a painful experience, yes. It takes a little bit longer than shaving with a safety if you do the whole steamed-towel thing, but not enough so you’d notice (then again, I only need to shave about once a week, so it could take longer than I think it does). I only cut myself once a year or so, but every time I do, people are asking if I got into a knife fight for a week afterwards.

And the proper precautions around other people are to warn them that anyone who tries to surprise you or bump you gets a slash to equal your own. Probably you don’t want to do that to your kids, but for roomies and such it works just fine.

Given that this isn’t the most widely used form of shaving, and takes a bit more skill than dragging a safety razor down your cheeks, how did all of you learn how to do it? Did you happen to know someone who already knew, or do you just have balls the size of cantaloupes and try it out?

The boyfriend does it. You can practice on a balloon, but he just started doing it. You know what takes balls the size of cantaloupes? When his roomate used to have a mohawk, he shaved his head with a straight razor.

Now that’s punk.

I used to do it occasionally - and have also used a pocketknife. I used to do lots of whittling and got good at sharpening knives, and the pocketknife shaving was sort of a test.

One tiny cut.

Just tried doing it. Actually, I’ve never been shown anything about shaving - grew up with no older males around. I just proceeded carefully, as anyone might when dragging a very sharp blade around the face.

They’re kind of between large olives and golfballs.
