Anyone ever take an online writing course?

I’ve been playing around with writing fiction lately, and pondering the idea of taking some courses. I’m not particularly thrilled about taking a course at the local university, because 1) it’s a shitty university, and I’m not sure I want to sit around a class filled with 20-something low-achievers who can’t get into even a second-rate university 2) I’ve seen the writing that the instructors have done, and I’m not impressed and 3) I’m a hermit and would rather not venture outside if I can help it.

I’m mainly looking for something that will teach me something, and also just keep me on track and excited about writing. Nothing like being around a bunch of people who are also excited about something to keep you going, if you know what I mean.

There’s a ton of online writing courses, some that look decent and some that look like some hack who got published in a minor magazine 20 years ago now decided he can teach sorts of things. However, even with the ones that LOOK good, how do you really know if they’re decent? I guess I’d feel better if I could get some recomendations.

So, tell me what you know about writing courses. Was it worth it? Is it a better use of time to just sit my ass down and write something? Which class did you take?

For the record, the classes I’m leaning towards are taught by the Gotham Writer’s Workshop.
