Anyone getting threatening letters from Runescape?

I just got some sort of weird legal letter from Runescape (jagex.com) claiming they plan to sue me for trading something “outside of the game environment.” They cite all sorts of intention of pursuing civil action against me.

The email account they sent the email to is mine, but certainly not one I used to ever contact this gaming firm. In fact, I’ve never been to their gaming site before today (just to see where the googled url led) or opened an account there, under any email address or identity.

This seems like some sort of fishing - or phishing - expedition to me. Anyone else here experiencing anything remotely like it, particularly from this firm?

After verifying the firm exists, I did respond to their email in the negative but it still weirds me out.

(Moderators: I pondered putting this in the gaming section but figured it was in the end a more general question, especially since the issue is not game related as I have nothing to do with this gaming company to begin with.)

Check this thread on the Runescape forum.

Whether it was legitimate or not (it *was *probably just phishing) you shouldn’t have responded at all - and I hope you didn’t login to any accounts through any links in their email.

When someone you’ve never had any interaction with is threatening to sue you, they should have more than your email address to contact you by. Even on the off chance the threatened lawsuit was real, you’d still probably be better off ignoring their emails. If there was any substance to it, they’d have your name and address to at least send you something in the real mail.

If your reply asks for some kind of cash compensation (like if you sent them $200 via western union we will let this pass) then my bet is scammers.

Think of it like this:

If you sent out 10 million emails to people claiming you represent RIAA or something similar and that you are aware of provable music downloads from an artist you represent and for $250 we will settle now and spare yourself the cost of legal representation, court costs, etc.

of those 10 million emails, statistically at least 200,000 will hit people who do download music and a thousand of those will probably pay rather than “take a chance”

Thanks for the input, all. No, I did not click any links. I did get a generic reply letter from their legal department (that address was right) and was informed they’ve been victim of a mass phishing attack. Don’t know where they crooks got my email address, but it is no secret. All is well then, thanks for your time and attention!
