I can’t be neutral about MLMs, I think they’re the scum of the earth. They play on the vulnerable and lots of people are vulnerable now.

Friend A. Works in a back office for real estate. Obviously properties aren’t really being bought and sold now. Ugh, he’s actually into two different ones if you consider Tupperware to be one. Even worse, his bf is also into this crap. Needless to say I had to mute them completely on social media and set them to ignore on instant messages. It sucks, but they were spamming Facebook to death and I was being included in all sorts of group messages.

Friend B just got suckered this week. I feel bad for him, he had a job working in high end luggage sales. I don’t think high end retail nor travel is going to come roaring back soon. I have a feeling he’s going to end up muted too, which is a shame as he lives nearby and it’s helpful to get neighborhood updates from him, stores that are constantly changing hours and that sort of stuff.
I know, I could just talk to them and tell them that spamming social media is annoying and I don’t want to talk about their wonderful new business. I’m not particularly close with either, far more of a grab a beer with or occasionally chat about baseball or music. And, it’s been my experience that people in the induction phase of an MLM have already been told that their friends will ruin their dreams with their stinking thinking.
Anyway, not just a rant about a couple of my friends. Anyone else seeing people getting suckered into MLMs while the economy is closed?
I have no idea about either one of their financial situations. My guess is there neither has a huge rainy day savings and I hope like hell they’re not dipping into retirement money to ‘achieve their dreams by being their own boss.’
Two things:
1)If any time the friends are posting that kind of stuff they also tag the company, you can block the company. For example, if you see “Friend A is with Tupperware: Just got in a new shipment!”.
I’ve had that work a few times with friends that did almost nothing but post about their current business venture.
1)Get FB Purity (at least if you’re using Chrome/Firefox). On top of it making facebook considerably more usable, you can also block posts that contain certain words (like Tupperware).
In either case, what these can allow you to do is filter out some of the spam from these friends and still allow their regular posts to get through.
What I wish FB still had was “See less from this person”. It was a nice middle ground between having to unfollow/hide them and having to read 15 posts a day about the same thing.
I really hate having to totally hide a friend for one reason or another and then bumping into them IRL being totally clueless about some important life event. It’s a bit embarrassing to bump into a friend and not realize that they had a baby a few months back.
Aren’t we giving these, er, business entities a free pass by calling them MLMs? Sounds quite respectable.
Seems as though the old “pyramid scheme” was far more accurate and descriptive.
Former coworker was in to Lularoe a few years ago. Then for a while there were piles of shit in the break room she was trying to offload.
Now I just see her on FB, but apparently she’s in to some makeup bullshit now.
Another friend from college had a very nice job, but quit TO BET HER OWN BOSS!! Posted about her stupid conventions and crap. Good what… She’s not doing that any more, and has a real job. Must not be that great, because I don’t know what it is.
Those are just a couple. Yeah, horrible things. I keep wanting to tell them Nooooo but the one time I did I instantly got unfriended.
